Determination of optimum notching dates in some plum cultivars
Abstract
Notching is a pomological and technical practice mainly employed in pome fruit plantations. In highly intensive plum plantations there is a notching requirement, particularly in the training stage. The paper presents two-year results on employing notching in two plum cultivars (Stanley and Cacanska rodna) grafted on wild cherry plum (Prunus cerasifera) and grown in dense planting. The notching operation was carried out at two dates. The first date of notching above the vegetative leader buds coincided with the plum flower bud swelling stage, and the second date was at the stage when the flower buds were closed with green sepals (about 10 days later than the first date). The success of the practice was evaluated by whether a shoot developed from the bud above which notching was performed or whether no reaction ensued. The results showed that there were different reactions as to the notching date (a better result was achieved at the second notching date), as well as differences between t...he cultivars in their reaction to the practice employed (a somewhat better reaction recorded with the Cacanska Rodna cultivar). An overall conclusion is that the reaction of both cultivars to notching was excellent and that the practice can be successfully employed in plum cultivars Stanley and Cacanska Rodna.
