AB - In recent years, the demand for strawberries on the world market is constantly increasing, primarily due to their unique taste and health benefits. Fruits produced without the use of agrochemicals, which are at the same time safer, more nutritious and healthier, are in particular demand. These forced researchers to identify ecologically safe techniques that can satisfy consumer preferences. Although many aspects of environmental methodologies in strawberry cultivation have already been investigated, the application of biosafe fertilizers and/or pesticides which greatly contribute to healthy food is still rare. Based on this background, a new formula of the liquid vermicompost-based product (VCMo), consisting of microbes from Trichoderma, Bacillus, Pseudomonas and Azotobacter genera, suitable for both nutrition and protection, has been developed at the Fruit Research Institute Čačak (Republic of Serbia). Its effectiveness was assessed by measuring the degree of gray mould (Botrytis cinerea Pers.) infection and changes in quality (fruit weight and dimensions, total phenolic content and antioxidant activity) of strawberry fruits. In addition, its efficacy has been compared to the biodegradable product (FitoBotryfun) and a combination of synthetic fungicides (Switch+ Signum). As regards the control of gray mould, the highest efficacy was achieved by the Switch+ Signum application, followed by VCMo, while the efficacy of FitoBotryfun was less satisfactory. On the other hand, the highest quality of the strawberry fruits was observed in VCMo treatment followed by FitoBotryfun and Switch+ Signum. The obtained results suggest that VCMo can be an alternative to chemical-based fungicides in B. cinerea control programme of strawberries. All this together qualifies VCMo as a promising biological treatment that meets the needs of both growers and consumers.

AB - The demand for food is expected to increase by up to 70% by 2050 due to the projected population of over 10 billion people. Conventional agricultural methods, which imply the application of synthetic fertilizers and pesticides, are unlikely to meet this demand. Therefore, there is a need for the intensification of agricultural production. However, the excessive use of synthetic fertilizers and chemically synthesized pesticides can have adverse effects on the environment, soil fertility, crop yields, human health, and food quality. Therefore, harmonizing plant nutrition and protection through sustainable principles in agriculture represents a major goal and challenge for agriculture in the 21st century. Innovative, sustainable, and environmentally safe solutions and bio-rational technologies such as the use of fertilizers and pesticides of biological origin need to be introduced. This paper provides a review of recent achievements in orchard nutrition and protection management by introducing a new product based on liquid biofertilizer. This biofertilizer is derived from vermicompost and enriched with different strains of beneficial microorganisms from Azotobacter, Bacillus, Pseudomonas, and Trichoderma genera, which contribute to increasing productivity, quality characteristics, and economic efficiency of production while simultaneously respecting ecological and health safety standards. The new formula includes a complete technological procedure and has been developed at the Fruit Research Institute, Čačak in the Republic of Serbia.

AB - Honey is a natural product which has high nutritional value. Also, it has health benefits, which is the reason for its been used for the prevention of diseases caused by oxidative stress for centuries in many countries. Honey has antibacterial and antioxidant properties, which are the result of the presence of enzymes and chemical and phytochemical components, where phenolic acids and flavonoids play a significant role. The aim of this study was to examine the physico-chemical parameters, antioxidant properties and antimicrobial activity of forest-meadow, acacia and sunflower honey from the Gruža and Požega areas (Republic of Serbia). The tested physico-chemical parameters were found to be within the values prescribed by the Legislation and the Codex Alimentarius Standard. The presence of HMF was not detected in the sample of forest-meadow honey, while the content in other samples (1.09 and 1.79 mg HMF kg-1) was significantly below the value laid down by regulations (40 mg HMF kg-1). Forest-meadow honey had the highest antioxidant activity (35.2%, 26.32%-ABTS and DPPH method, respectively) and the highest content of total phenolics (90.96±5.18 g GAE 100 g-1), while acacia honey exhibited the lowest values for antioxidant activity (11.76%-ABTS; 7.28%-DPPH) and total phenolics (15.75±0,66 g GAE 100 g-1). Forest-meadow honey showed the best antibacterial activity, followed by sunflower and acacia honey.

AB - Anthracnose disease can be successfully controlled by chemical pesticides in conventional fruit growing. However, in organic farming, in order to maintain environmental safety and fulfill consumer demand for pesticide-free food, the control of this disease is a major problem. The use of biocontrol agents with the antagonistic mechanism of control of many phytopathogens is an innovative alternative for cost-effective and eco-friendly production. The antagonistic activities of Trichoderma viride and Bacillus subtilis were tested in vitro against Colletotrichum acutatum, one of major plant pathogens responsible for anthracnose. The microbial antagonists inhibited mycelial growth in the dual culture. T. viride exhibited strong antagonism against C. acutatum isolates (80%). The B. subtilis isolate also had a strong effect on inhibiting the development of C. acutatum (37.5%). The results of this study identified T. viride and B. subtilis as promising biological control agents for further testing against anthracnose disease in fruits.

AB - Intensive agricultural development based on the long-term and excessive use of chemical nitrogen fertilizers significantly contributes to a series of undesirable effects and results in environmental pollution. In line with the above, there is a pressing need for major changes in agricultural production management. Bearing in mind that fertilization strategy, among other practices, plays an important role in improving the growing technology of different fruit crops, we considered that the above mentioned problems could be overcome by introducing an environmentally safe and innovative practice inplum growing technology as well. Accordingly, a comparative study was conducted to evaluate the effects of biofertilizer (a combination of nitrogen-fixing and phosphorus-mineralizing bacteria including Azotobacter chroococcum, Bacillus megatherium and Bacillus subtilis) and chemical fertilizer (a water-soluble chemical fertilizer supplemented with the microelements B, Cu, Fe, Mn and Zn)on ʻČačanska Lepotica' and 'Stanley' plum cultivars. Morphometric characteristics (fruit weight, length and width), internal quality traits (soluble solids content and firmness) and chemical properties (total phenolic content and total antioxidant activity) of the fruit of the tested plum cultivars were assessed. The obtained results indicate that the substitution of chemical fertilization with biofertilization in 'Čačanska Lepotica' and 'Stanley' is a justified practice. Furthermore, this approach seems to havepotential as an appropriate technique in commercial plum production, which may improve yield-attributing characteristics and the phytochemical content of plum fruits.
AB - Intenzivni razvoj poljoprivredne proizvodnje zasnovan na dugoročnoj i prekomernoj upotrebi mineralnih azotnih đubriva značajno doprinosi nizu neželjenih efekata i rezultira zagađenjem životne sredine. Shodno tome, u zasadu šljive sorti ʻČačanska lepotica' i 'Stanley' sprovedena su uporedna proučavanja uticaja biofertilizacije (kombinacija azoto-fiksirajućih i fosfo-mineralizirajućih bakterija: Azotobacter chroococcum, Bacillus megatherium i Bacillus subtilis) i upotrebe mineralnog hraniva (vodotopivo mineralno hranivo sa dodatkom mikroelemenata: B, Cu, Fe, Mn i Zn).

AB - The aim of this study was to assess the sanitary status of soils in the Municipality of Čačak, based on the presence of Escherichia coli and Salmonella sp. The examination involved testing soils previously exposed to different forms of degradation, including soils near industrial zones and landfills, soils close to congested roads, soils exposed to floods, and soils exposed to the uncontrolled use of agrochemicals and agricultural machinery. The data obtained indicate that the examined soils are mostly unpolluted or slightly to moderately polluted and that therefore they will not have a negative effect on plant production and the health of humans and animals.

AB - Evaluation was performed of the effect made by integrated and conventional production systems on phenolic composition and antioxidant capacity of cv. Senga Sengana strawberry grown under greenhouse conditions over two consecutive years. The experiment also involved three different types of fertilizer. The integrated production system provides significantly larger quantities of polyphenols as well as a higher antioxidant capacity, compared to values obtained using the conventional system. The investigation into total phenolics content and total antioxidant capacity, as well as individual flavonols and phenolic acids (except gallic acid) content reveals a pronounced effect of the applied biofertilizers (PGPR 1 and PGPR 2). On the other hand, applied chemical fertilizer (Multi KMg) gives the best results in terms of anthocyanins content. These results indicate that there were significant differences in phenols content among integrated and conventional production systems, as well as between biofertilizers and a chemical fertilizer.

On the other hand, applied chemical fertilizer (Multi KMg) gives the best results in terms of anthocyanins content. These results indicate that there were significant differences in phenols content among integrated and conventional production systems, as well as between biofertilizers and a chemical fertilizer.",

AB - The paper shows the effect of increasing NPK fertilizer rates on the developement of the Azotobacter and oligonitrophyles over the three-year period (2003-2005). The investigation was carried out in the plum planting established by Fruit Research Institute Cacak (Serbia) according to the randomised block design with three replications. The soil was treated with 8:16:24 + 3% of MgO mineral fertilizer as follows: treatment N-1 - 400 kg ha(-1); treatment N-2 - 600 kg ha(-1); treatment N-3 - 800 kg ha(-1) and treatment N-4 - 1000 kg ha(-1). Unfertilized soil was used as the control. The effect of the studied mineral fertilizer rates was determined three times over the growing season. It was checked by identification of the number of Azotobacter (by the fertile drop method on Fyodorov's medium) and oligonitrophyles (by indirect rarefaction method on Fyodorov's medium). The data obtained showed that the use of high mineral fertiliser rates (N-3 and N-4) induced a decrease in the number of Azotobacter and oligonitrophyles. On the other hand, the use of lower fertilizer rates (N-1 and N-2) enhanced the number of the studied group of microorganisms. The most pronounced fertiliser effect was recorded in the second sampling period and in the first year of the experiment. Considering the soil biological properties, the N-2 treatment (600 kg ha(-1)) can be recommended as the most favourable one for 'Cacanska Rodna' growing in the stated agro ecological conditions.

AB - Microorganisms population, as major soil component, is very significant indicator of soil fertility, i.e. the process of soil degradation. Microbial population density and enzyme activity of microorganisms may be highly reliable practical indicators which can suggest the answer to the question concerning conditions that favour plant production. The influence of different NPK fertiliser rates on microbiological activity of the alluvial soil planted with plum culture has been studied over a 3-year period. The effect of the mineral fertiliser used was determined 3 times over the growing season and was monitored through determinations of the number of different groups of microorganisms and proteinase activity in the soil. The 3-year results suggest that the effect of the applied fertilisers was induced by numerous factors, which primarily refers to climate effects and its specific elements, the activity of the plant itself and its root metabolism, as well as the effect of soil specificities, i.e. its structural, chemical and agro-chemical properties. Taking into account biological properties of soil, plum production, economic and environmental indicators of the results of the stated treatments, the rate of 600 kg ha(-1) can be recommended for growing plum under the stated environmental conditions.

AB - This paper examines the effect of Bioplant-K and Slavol on soil microbial activity (total number of microorganisms, numbers of azotobacter, oligonitrophiles, soil fungi and actinomycetes) and growth (length of underground and aboveground plant parts) of Ficus nitida and Euonymus compacta. Microbial counts were determined by an indirect method of growth on specific selective media. The tested microbial fertilisers induced a substantial increase in the total number of microorganisms and oligonitrophiles in the soil under the 2 plants, whereas the number of actinomycetes increased only by Bioplant-K. The soil azotobacter number was not significantly increased by the applied microbial fertilisers. The use of Bioplant-K resulted in a considerable decrease in fungi number in the soil under the two plants, whereas the effect of Slavol was not statistically significant. An increase in the number of the tested groups of microorganisms was observed during the growing season. Either of the microbial fertilisers had a stimulating effect on the growth of the underground and aboveground parts of the plants, that of Bioplant-K being, however, more pronounced.

Microbial counts were determined by an indirect method of growth on specific selective media. Enteroplantin and Slavol induced an increase in the number of all examined groups of microorganisms, except soil fungi. Enteroplantin was found to be particularly effective in this respect, having a more stimulating effect on the growth of roots and aboveground parts of both plants, in the course of the entire study period (2006-2008). The observed growth of the aboveground parts and roots of both plants, the established values of soil microbial parameters, and potential economic and environmental effects suggest that Enteroplantin and Slavol can be recommended for use in cultivating Camellia sp. and Cupressus macrocarpa gold crest.

AB - The laboratory and field studies were conducted to determine the effect of the application of conventional and botanical insecticides on microbiological activity in the soil. The trial was set up in the autumn 2007 in glasshouse of Fruit Research Institute, Cacak, Republic of Serbia. In vegetative 10-litre vessels, strawberry runners, immersed for 10 min in water heated to 46 degrees C, were planted. The trial included 4 treatment variants (I - microbiological fertiliser Enteroplantin; II - microbiological fertiliser Slavol; III - mineral fertiliser Multi KMg; IV - non-fertilised soil) as well as the application of conventional and botanical insecticides. The experiment was carried out under the randomised block design system, in 3 replications. Over the growing season, conventional measures involved the application of endosulphan (Thiosulfan 0.2%) and gusathion (Gusathion 0.15%). As for botanical insecticides, neem (NeemAzal 0.4%) and pyrethrin (Pyros 0.2%) were used as the part of organic production system. The effect of the applied insecticides was determined twice over the growing season and was monitored by checking the fungal and actinomycetes count. Indirect dilution methods of growing on adequate culture media were used to determine the number of studied microorganisms groups. The two-year results (2008-2009) suggest that the insecticides applied within conventional production system caused significant reduction in the number of the soil fungi.

Enteroplantin was found to be particularly effective in this respect, having a more stimulating effect on the growth of roots and aboveground parts of both plants, in the course of the entire study period (2006-2008). The observed growth of the aboveground parts and roots of both plants, the established values of soil microbial parameters, and potential economic and environmental effects suggest that Enteroplantin and Slavol can be recommended for use in cultivating Camellia sp. and Cupressus macrocarpa gold crest.",

AB - The present study evaluates the effect of increasing rates of mineral nitrogen (90; 120; 150 kgxha(-1)), liquid manure (80 kgxha(-1)) and solid manure (45 txha(-1)) on the microbial properties of vertisol (total number of microorganisms, numbers of actinomycetes and cellulolytic microorganisms) under maize. The research results showed dependence of the number of the test groups of microorganisms on the type and rate of fertilization, as well as on the date and zone of sampling. Namely, lower nitrogen fertilization rates (90 and 120 kgxha(-1)) induced a significant increase in the total number of microorganisms, whereas the high rate (150 kgxha(-1)) had a depressive effect, especially in maize edaphosphere. However, the numbers of actinomycetes and cellulolytic microorganisms were not reduced under these treatments. The organic fertilizers applied had a stimulatory effect on the above soil biological parameters.

AB - This study was conducted to evaluate the effect of the application of different rates of mineral nitrogen, well rotten farmyard manure and Klebsiella planticola SL09-based microbial biofertilizer (enteroplantin) on the count of soil microorganisms (total microbial count, counts of Azotobacter, oligonitrophilic bacteria, fungi and actinomycetes), stem height and yield of potato. The experiment was set up as a randomized block design in four replications at the experimental field of the Biotechnical Faculty, Podgorica in 2008. Potato cultivar Kennebec was used as the test plant. The trial involved six treatments: non-fertilized control; N-1 treatment with 100 kg/ha CAN (calcium ammonium nitrate, 27% N); N-2 treatment with 200 kg/ha CAN; N-3 treatment with 300 kg/ha CAN; treatment with Enteroplantin- K. planticola SL09-based biofertilizer; and treatment with 30 t/ha solid well rotten farmyard manure. The results obtained suggested that well rotten farmyard manure induced the highest increase in microbial counts, potato yield and stem height. A similar effect on all microorganisms, except actinomycetes and fungi was seen with the use of K. planticola SL09-based biofertilizer. The potato yield and stem height obtained with the use of 300 kg/ha CAN was non-significantly higher than that of 200 kg/ha CAN treatment, with the count of the soil microorganisms tested been significantly reduced.

AB - The dynamics of soil mould populations that can compromise the human immune system was evaluated in experimental plots located at different distances (100, 300, 500, 700 and 900 m) from the main source of pollution - the Podgorica Aluminum Plant. Soil samples were collected in July and October 2008 from three different plot zones at a depth of 0-10 cm. The count of potentially pathogenic, keratinolytic and allergenic (melaninogenic) moulds was assessed, which can significantly contribute to both diagnosis and prophylaxis. The count of medically important moulds was higher in the urban soil than in the unpolluted (control) soil. Their count decreased with increasing distance from the main pollution source (PAP). Their abundance in the soil was considerably higher in autumn than in spring.

AB - Over the two-year study (2008-2009) we monitored the influence of integrated and conventional production systems on microbiological activity in soil and strawberry yield. The experiment also involved fertilizers applied in three variants of treatment. The studied parameters were monitored over 2008 and 2009 by determining the total number of soil microorganisms, the number of ammonifying bacteria and the strawberry yield. The results of the study suggest the pronounced inhibitory effect of insecticides on number of studied microorganism groups in all three conventionally treated variants, over the both years of study, which further infers negligible stimulative influence of strawberry plants on yield.

AB - The paper presents the research results on the effect of different mineral fertiliser rates on the microbiological activity of alluvium under plum over the 2003-2005 period. The trial was conducted in an experimental plum plantation of the Fruit Research Institute and at the Microbiology Department of the Faculty of Agronomy in Cacak. The soil was treated with 8:16:24 + 3% MgO mineral fertiliser, as follows: the N-1 variant - 400 kg/ha; the N-2 variant - 600 kg/ha; the N-3 variant - 800 kg/ha; the N-4 variant - 1,000 kg/ha and the N-5 variant (the control - non-fertilised soil). The effect of the used fertiliser was determined three times during the growing season and was monitored through determinations of the number of azotobacter (by the fertile drop method on Fyodorov's medium). The obtained data showed that the soil azotobacter development was affected by the fertilisation variants employed, the sampling periods and the research years. The use of high mineral fertiliser rates (N-3 and N-4) induced a decrease in the number of azotobacter. The use of lower rates resulted in an increase in the number of this group of microorganisms. The most pronounced fertiliser effect was recorded in the second sampling period and in 2003. The highest plum yield was achieved by the use of the mineral fertiliser rate of 600 kg/ha.

AB - Over a three-year examination period (2003-2005), the effect of different NPK fertiliser rates on the microbiological activity of alluvium under plum was monitored. The trial was set up in a trial plum plantation of the Field and Grape Research Institute and at the Microbiology Department of the Faculty of Agronomy in Cacak according to a randomised block design with three replications. The soil was treated with a 8:16:24 + 3% MgO mineral fertiliser, as follows: the N-1 variant - 400 kg/ha; the N-2 variant - 600 kg/ha; the N-3 variant - 800 kg/ha; the N-4 - variant - 1000 kg/ha and the N-5 variant (control - non-fertilised soil). The applied fertiliser effect on soil microorganisms was determined three times during the growing season and was monitored by determining the total number of microorganisms and the number of ammonifiers. The high fertiliser rates used brought about a decrease in the total number of microorganisms, as well as in the number of ammonifiers (the most pronounced one in the N-4 variants), while lower and medium rates induced an increase in the number of the examined groups of microorganisms (the most pronounced one in the N-2 variants). The applied fertiliser effect was most marked in the second sampling period, during 2003. The most significant plum yield increase was achieved by the mineral fertiliser application rate of 600 kg/ha. Considering the above mentioned and based on the plum yields achieved, as well as on the chemical and biological characteristics of the soil and economic and ecological indicators of the results of the fertiliser treatments mentioned, it can be concluded that the 600 kg/ha rate can be recommended for plum cultivation under the said agro-environmental conditions.

AB - The influence of different NPK fertilizer rates on the developement of the saprophytic fungi of the alluvial soil planted with plum culture has been studied over the three-year period (2003-2005). The trial was set up in the experimental plum orchard established by Fruit Research Institute Cacak (Serbia) and at the laboratory of Department of Microbiology, Faculty of Agronomy Cacak (Serbia). The soil was treated with 8: 16: 24 + 3% of MgO mineral fertilizer in the following treatment variants: variant N-1-400 kgha(-1); variant N-2-600 kgha(-1); variant N-3-800 kgha(-1) and variant N-4-1000 kgha(-1), all treatment variants being applied in three replications. Unfertilized soil served as the control. The size of the trial plot was 68 m(2). The effect of the studied mineral fertilizer rates was determined three times over the growing season. It was checked by identification of the number of saprophytic fungi by the indirect rarefaction method on Czapek nutritive medium. The results of the study suggested that the number of the saprophytic fungi varied by different fertilizer rates, periods of sampling and years of study. The application of fertilizers brought about increase in the number of the saprophytic fungi. Of all studied treatment variants, the one with highest nitrogen rate (variant N 4) exhibited the strongest effect. The influence of the applied fertilizer was highest over the third sampling period. Furthermore, the effect thereof was highest in 2003. The application of 600 kgha-1 of mineral fertilizer resulted in the highest plum yield.

AB - Over the 2003-2005 period, the effect of different mineral fertiliser rates on the number of actinomycetes in alluvium under the 'Cacanska Lepotica' plum cultivar was monitored. The investigations were conducted in an experimental plum plantation of the Fruit Research Institute and at the Microbiology Department of the Faculty of Agronomy in Cacak. The soil was treated with different 8:16:24 + 3% MgO mineral fertiliser rates, as follows: the N-1 variant - 400 kg/ha; the N-2 variant - 600 kg/ha; the N-3 variant - 800 kg/ha; the N-4 variant - 1,000 kg/ha and the N-5 variant (the control - non-fertilised soil). The effect of the fertilisers used was monitored through determinations of the number of actinomycetes made three times during the growing period by an indirect dilution method on Krasilnikov's synthetic medium. The development of the actinomycetes in the soil was dependent on the fertilisation variant applied, the sampling period and the research year. The use of high mineral fertiliser rates induced a decrease in the number of actinomycetes, which was particularly pronounced with the N-4 rate used. The use of lower rates brought about an increase in the number of actinomycetes. Of all the fertiliser variants examined, the most stimulatory effect was expressed by the N-2 variant. The most pronounced effect of the applied fertiliser was recorded in the second sampling period and in 2003. The most important increase in the plum yield was achieved by the use of mineral fertilisers at the rate of 600 kg/ha.
