AB - Bio-based solutions that promote plant growth, yields and functional quality of foods in primary production are gaining popularity in environmentally challenging conditions such as temperature fluctuations, late frosts and excess precipitation. This study was implemented to examine the foliar effect of microalgae biostimulants (three microalgae: Chlorella vulgaris, Scenedesmus vacuolatus and Coelastrella sp. in two concentrations ‒ 5 and 10%) on growth, productivity and fruit quality of strawberry cultivar ‘Alba’. Strawberry vegetative and generative potential (rosette height, number of leaves, flowers and fruit per plant), physical fruit properties (weight, height, width and shape index) was assessed with standard morphometric methods as well as fruit quality (sugars, organic acids and phenolic compounds) with high performance liquid chromatography/mass spectrometry (HPLC/MS). Result showed that algae treatment T6 (Coelastrella sp., 10%) applied foliarly positively affected on the balance between vegetative and generative growth and consequently, more than 25% higher yields for the treated plants. Content of sugar and most of secondary metabolites in treatment T6 were more than 10% higher compared to other treatments. Overall, the results of the present study suggest the sustainable approach of microalgae application may introduce positive advances in organic strawberry production in field conditions. Furthermore, research provides novel insights into influence of microalgae on important fruit quality components that can contribute to the various potential-beneficial human health effects.

AB - Natural biostimulant products that enhance the growth, productivity, and nutritional quality of
fruits are becoming increasingly popular, particularly in challenging environmental conditions
like fluctuating temperatures, spring frosts, and excessive precipitation. This study aimed to
evaluate the effect of the dihydroquercetin-based biostimulant on the yield and fruit quality of
the strawberry cultivar 'Alba' grown in an open field condition. Biostimulant application
increased strawberry yield, total phenolic content and antioxidant activity, while physical
traits, total soluble solids (TSS), titratable acidity (TA), pH, and total sugars (TS), invert sugar
(IS) and sucrose (SUC) responded differently to the biostimulant. The application of
dihydroquercetin-based nanoemulsion negatively affected the content of TSS, TA, TS and IS
but not the external appearance of the strawberry (weight, dimensions, shape, index color and
firmness). These data suggested that dihydroquercetin-based treatment might maintain
physical traits while improving the content of bioactive compounds of strawberry fruit due to
the enhancement of the phenolic content and antioxidant activity.
temperatur, spomladanske pozebe in prevelike količine padavin. Namen te študije je bil
oceniti učinek biostimulanta na osnovi dihidrokvercetina na rodnost in kakovost plodov
žlahtnega jagodnjaka sorte 'Alba', gojenega na prostem. Uporaba biostimulanta je povečala
pridelek, vsebnost skupnih fenolov in antioksidativni potencial, medtem ko so se druge
spremenljivke, kot so topna suha snov (TSS), titracijske kisline (TA), pH, vsebnost skupnih
sladkorjev (TS), invertnega sladkorja (IS) in saharoza (SUC), različno odzvale na uporabo
biostimulanta.
antioksidativne aktivnosti.

AB - Effect of pre-harvest calcium chloride (CaCl2) treatment on fruit quality attributes of three apple cultivars (‘Golden Delicious Reinders®’, ‘Granny Smith’ and ‘Red Chief ’) at harvest and after two and four months of cold storage during two consecutive years was studied. Trees were sprayed four times starting from the beginning of June at 20-day intervals. After harvest, fruits were stored in a regular atmosphere (RA) for further analysis. Measurements included fruit weight, weight loss, firmness, total soluble solids (TSS), titrable acidity (TA), total sugars (TS), TS/TA, total phenolic content (TPC) and antioxidant activity (AA). CaCl2 had a positive impact on fruit firmness of all cultivars in both years. Higher values of TSS and TS of ‘Golden Delicious Reinders®’ were
determined in CaCl2 treatment in both years. TSS, TS and TS/TA were increased by prolonging storage in ‘Red Chief’ in CaCl2 treatment and control, in both years. TSS and TS proved similarly stable in ‘Granny Smith’ during storage in CaCl2 treatment and control in the second year of examination, but a decrease of TA and TS/TA has been detected in both years of storage. The AA of cultivars ‘Golden Delicious Reinders®’ and ‘Red Chief’ was stronger affected by the storage compared to CaCl2 treatment. Through a comprehensive analysis of apple cultivars it can be concluded that pre-harvest application of CaCl2 in cultivars ‘Golden Delicious Reinders®’ and ‘Red Chief’ can be used to improve fruit quality during storage.

AB - In the experiment, fruit characteristics (fruit weight, fruit length, fruit width, fruit thickness,
stone weight, stone share, stalk length and stalk weight) and contents of primary metabolites
(soluble solids, total sugars, invert sugars, proteins, sucrose, titratable acidity and pH) of sour
cherry cultivars were studied. The research included fruits of five cultivars ('Sofija', 'Iskra',
'Nevena', 'Šumadinka' and 'Čačanski Rubin') developed in a breeding program at the Fruit
Research Institute in Čačak and 'Heimanns Konserven Weichsel' as a standard cultivar.
During the experimental period, significant differences in the parameters tested were observed
among the cultivars. Fruit weight ranged from 5.69 g ('Heimanns K.W.') to 7.68 g ('Sofija'),
while stone weight ranged from 0.36 g ('Iskra') to 0.48 g ('Čačanski Rubin'). The cultivar
'Sofija' had the highest fruit dimensions and stalk length, whereas the highest value for stone
share was found in 'Čačanski Rubin'. Among primary metabolites, soluble solids content
(16.43%) was highest in 'Iskra', while total sugars and invert sugars were high in ‘Čačanski
Rubin’ (10.17% and 9.15%, respectively). Also, 'Čačanski Rubin' was the cultivar with the
highest content of sucrose, while 'Nevena', Šumadinka' and 'Sofija' had higher contents of
proteins compared to the other cultivars studied. In contrast, the highest level of titratable
acidity was obtained in 'Heimanns K.W.', and the highest fruit pH in 'Čačanski Rubin'. The
present results indicate that tested sour cherry cultivars due to the numerous positive physical
and chemical characteristics deserve a place in intensive orchards and breeding programs as
cultivars with enhanced nutritional value of fruits.

abstract = "In the experiment, fruit characteristics (fruit weight, fruit length, fruit width, fruit thickness, stone weight, stone share, stalk length and stalk weight) and contents of primary metabolites(soluble solids, total sugars, invert sugars, proteins, sucrose, titratable acidity and pH) of sourcherry cultivars were studied. The research included fruits of five cultivars ('Sofija', 'Iskra','Nevena', 'Šumadinka' and 'Čačanski Rubin') developed in a breeding program at the FruitResearch Institute in Čačak and 'Heimanns Konserven Weichsel' as a standard cultivar.During the experimental period, significant differences in the parameters tested were observedamong the cultivars. Fruit weight ranged from 5.69 g ('Heimanns K.W.') to 7.68 g ('Sofija'),while stone weight ranged from 0.36 g ('Iskra') to 0.48 g ('Čačanski Rubin'). The cultivar'Sofija' had the highest fruit dimensions and stalk length, whereas the highest value for stoneshare was found in 'Čačanski Rubin'. Among primary metabolites, soluble solids content(16.43%) was highest in 'Iskra', while total sugars and invert sugars were high in ‘ČačanskiRubin’ (10.17% and 9.15%, respectively). Also, 'Čačanski Rubin' was the cultivar with thehighest content of sucrose, while 'Nevena', Šumadinka' and 'Sofija' had higher contents ofproteins compared to the other cultivars studied. In contrast, the highest level of titratableacidity was obtained in 'Heimanns K.W.', and the highest fruit pH in 'Čačanski Rubin'. Thepresent results indicate that tested sour cherry cultivars due to the numerous positive physicaland chemical characteristics deserve a place in intensive orchards and breeding programs ascultivars with enhanced nutritional value of fruits.",

AB - Raspberries are highly valued by consumers due to their nutraceutical properties, which have been associated with various health benefits. The production of red raspberry in the Republic of Serbia is characterized by a dominance of cultivar ‘Willamette’. The aim of this study was to identify fruit quality of ‘TulaMagic’, ‘Tulameen’, ‘Amira’, ‘Fertodi Zamatos’, and ‘Willamette’ in the region of Arilje (Western Serbia). The highest weight (5.2 g) and length (25.8 mm), as well as the highest content of soluble solids (12.1%), total (6.5%), and invert sugars (0.8%), and sucrose content (0.8%) were found in ‘Tulameen’. The highest total phenols content (89.36 mg GAE 100 g−1 FW) was found in ‘Fertodi Zamatos’, whereas the highest content of anthocyanins (43.53 mg C3G 100 g−1 FW) was found in ‘Willamette’. The highest antioxidant capacity was in ‘Fertodi Zamatos’ (288.71%) and ‘Willamette’ (265.59%). The results obtained in this study proved the high nutritional capacity of fruits of the studied raspberry cultivars. Further research should focus on investigation of other their agronomic important properties to be able to recommend these cultivars for intensive introduction in raspberry commercial production in the Republic of Serbia.

AB - Apple (Malus×domestica Borkh.) is one of the most represented and economically most
important fruit species. There are a number of calcium-containing products on the market that
can be applied before or after harvest to delay fruit maturation with no negative effects on
consumers. The paper also presents the results of a study on the effects of a foliar application
of calcium chloride (ʻStopitʼ) on the physical and basic fruit quality properties of the apple
cultivar ʻGlosterʼ. The study was conducted for two consecutive years, and the changes in
fruit weight, firmness, dimensions, soluble solids, total sugars, and organic acids content were
studied during harvest and storage periods of 60 and 120 days in a regular cold chamber.
Fruits treated with calcium chloride had higher fruit weight, height, width, firmness, total
sugars, and ratio between total sugars and organic acids (206.0 g, 70.6 mm, 77.8 mm, 7.6 kg
cm-2, 10.4%, and 21.4, respectively). The storage period had a significant effect on all fruit
parameters studied, except for the content of total acids. The highest values of physical
properties were mesured at the moment of storage, soluble solids content after 60 days (13.2°
Brix), and total sugars (10.9%) and sugar/acid ratio (22.3) after 120 days of storage. Foliar
application of CaCl2 during vegetation can be an effective measure to avoid losses in apple
fruit quality during storage in the regular cold chamber.

AB - The European blackberry (Rubus subg. Rubus Watson) is an important berry in Serbia and is positioned immediately after the raspberry and strawberry in terms of economic significance. The two most grown cultivars of blackberry in Serbia are ‘Loch Ness’ and ‘Čačanska Bestrna,’ each with their own unique characteristics and benefits. The choice of cultivar depends on the specific needs and preferences of the grower, as well as the growing conditions and market demand in their region. The aim of this study was to compare the fruit quality of the ‘Loch Ness’ and ‘Čačanska Bestrna’ blackberry cultivars during different maturity stages (fully ripe and overripe). The study found that both cultivars had higher values of soluble solids content (10.80° Brix), total anthocyanins (118.09 mg cyn-3-glu 100 g-1 FW), weight (7.64 g), length (26.57 mm), and fruit shape index (1.48) when sampled at the overripe maturity stage. On the other hand, an increase in total phenolic content (601.56 mg 100 g-1 FW), antioxidant capacity (3.81 µmol Trolox 100 g-1 FW), and fruit width (18.30 mm) was determined in fully ripe blackberry fruits. Considering that blackberry fruits produced in Serbia are mainly sold on domestic and foreign markets in a frozen state due to the low level of processing capacity, these research findings will be useful in modern food technology. The trend in food technology is directed towards extending the shelf life and increasing the content of nutrients in blackberry fruits.

AB - During the 2020 and 2021, the flowering phenophase and the most important characteristics of trees and fruits from fourteen in situ collected autochthonous plum genotypes grown in the area of western Serbia were investigated. The obtained results revealed that none of the collected genotypes showed low vigour, while the suckering tendency varied from low to extremely high, and yielding efficiency ranged from intermediate to good. All investigated genotypes were characterized with long blooming period with genotypes ʽŠ-GMNe/1ʼ and ʽŠ-UžK/5ʼ standing out for their very late onset of flowering. The tested genotypes had oval to elliptical fruit shape, small stone and medium flesh percentage. In terms of fruit size, the most of genotypes belonged to the small fruit group, a few were categorized as medium-sized fruit and only one genotype (ʽŠ-KrGP/2ʼ) fell into the large fruit category. Regarding the content of soluble solids, all tested genotypes showed good fruit quality. However, the genotype ʽŠ-ČaB/1ʼ stood out for having the highest levels of soluble solids, total and invert sugars indicating its distinct chemical composition.
One predstavljaju ogromno nacionalno bogatstvo i prirodni resurs koji nije u dovoljnoj meri istražen, a samim tim ni upotrebljen u adekvatne svrhe. Čak šta više, sve je prisutniji trend gubitka genetičkih resursa uzrokovan prenamenom zemljišta i uvođenjem u proizvodnju novijih sorti visoke rodnosti. Najznačajnije osobine stabla (bujnost, tendencija ka davanju izdanaka i koeficijent rodnosti ispitani su prema metodologiji navedenoj u međunarodno priznatom deskriptoru (Descriptor List for Plum and Allied Species, IBPGR), dok su fenološke (početak i kraj cvetanja) i pomološke osobine (masa ploda i koštice, randman ploda, dimenzije i indeks oblika ploda, sadržaj rastvorljive suve materije, ukupnih i invertnih šećera, sadržaj saharoze, ukupne kiseline i pH soka ploda) ispitane korišćenjem standardnih metoda.

AB - Raspberries are highly valued by consumers due to their nutraceutical properties, which have been associated with various health benefits. The aim of this study was to evaluate the differences in quality characteristics of fresh raspberry fruits and final products (jam and juice) collected from plantations under different agroecological conditions (three localities). The total phenolic content in raspberry fruits and products was quantified by the Folin-Ciocalteu method and the total anthocyanin content by the pH-differential method. In the same samples, eight elements (phosphate, iron, manganese, zinc, calcium, potassium, magnesium, and sodium) were determined using atomic absorption spectrophotometry. The productivity of red raspberry (Rubus idaeus L.) cultivar ‘Willamette’ was studied by examining the variation in the number of floricanes per espalier meter and per unit area as well as the variation in yield per cane and per unit area. The results showed that the highest yield was observed in the L2 locality (660.00 g per cane and 14,840 kg ha−1 of total area), while the lowest yield was recorded in the L3 one (519.67 g per cane and 11,779 kg ha−1 of total area). The amount of macro- and microelements in the soil and raspberry fruits varied between the localities with a higher nutrient content obtained in the L2 locality. The antioxidant capacity and total anthocyanin and phenolic content of the raspberry fruits were influenced by the cultivation area with the highest values of anthocyanins (63.45 mg cyn-3-glu 100 g−1 FW) and phenols (630.00 mg GAE 100 g−1 FW) observed in the L2 locality. The study also revealed that the processing of raspberry fruits into juice and jam had minimal effects on the antioxidant capacity and phenolic content. The findings highlight that ‘Willamette’ raspberries are a valuable source of bioactive compounds and minerals that contribute to their nutritional value and potential health benefits. Further research and optimisation of processing techniques are necessary to effectively preserve and enhance the bioactive compounds in processed raspberry products.

The study found that both cultivars had higher values of soluble solids content (10.80° Brix), total anthocyanins (118.09 mg cyn-3-glu 100 g -1 FW), weight (7.64 g), length (26.57 mm), and fruit shape index (1.48) when sampled at the overripe maturity stage.

AB - To identify and compare the differences in productivity and fruit quality of strawberry cultivar ‘Senga Sengana’ grown in open field and protected area fruits were harvested in 2021 in the region of Western Serbia. The yield, physical (fruit weight, dimensions, firmness), chemical (total soluble solids (TSS), total (TS) and invert sugars (IS), sucrose (SUC), titrable acids (TA), pH, sweetness index (TS/TA)) and nutritive traits (vitamin C, total phenols, total anthocyanins and antioxidative activity) of the fruits were analysed. Significantly higher yield per area unit, fruit weight and length, TSS, sugars, organic acids, sweetness index and nutritive quality were recorded in the fruits from protected area. Growing strawberries in a protected area, in addition to ensuring a safe yield, also has a positive effect on both the sensory and nutritional composition of the fruit.

AB - Apple (Malus×domestica Borkh.) is one of the most represented and economically most important fruit species. There are a number of calcium-containing products on the market that
can be applied before or after harvest to delay fruit maturation with no negative effects on consumers. The paper also presents the results of a study on the effects of a foliar application of calcium chloride (ʻStopitʼ) on the physical and basic fruit quality properties of the apple cultivar ʻGlosterʼ. The study was conducted for two consecutive years, and the changes in fruit weight, firmness, dimensions, soluble solids, total sugars, and organic acids content were studied during harvest and storage periods of 60 and 120 days in a regular cold chamber. Fruits treated with calcium chloride had higher fruit weight, height, width, firmness, total sugars, and ratio between total sugars and organic acids (206.0 g, 70.6 mm, 77.8 mm, 7.6 kg cm-2, 10.4%, and 21.4, respectively). The storage period had a significant effect on all fruit parameters studied, except for the content of total acids. The highest values of physical properties were mesured at the moment of storage, soluble solids content after 60 days (13.2° Brix), and total sugars (10.9%) and sugar/acid ratio (22.3) after 120 days of storage. Foliar application of CaCl2 during vegetation can be an effective measure to avoid losses in apple fruit quality during storage in the regular cold chamber.

AB - In the experiment, fruit characteristics (fruit weight, fruit length, fruit width, fruit thickness,
stone weight, stone share, stalk length and stalk weight) and contents of primary metabolites
(soluble solids, total sugars, invert sugars, proteins, sucrose, titratable acidity and pH) of sour
cherry cultivars were studied. The research included fruits of five cultivars ('Sofija', 'Iskra',
'Nevena', 'Šumadinka' and 'Čačanski Rubin') developed in a breeding program at the Fruit Research Institute in Čačak and 'Heimanns Konserven Weichsel' as a standard cultivar. During the experimental period, significant differences in the parameters tested were observed among the cultivars. Fruit weight ranged from 5.69 g ('Heimanns K.W.') to 7.68 g ('Sofija'), while stone weight ranged from 0.36 g ('Iskra') to 0.48 g ('Čačanski Rubin'). The cultivar 'Sofija' had the highest fruit dimensions and stalk length, whereas the highest value for stone share was found in 'Čačanski Rubin'. Among primary metabolites, soluble solids content (16.43%) was highest in 'Iskra', while total sugars and invert sugars were high in ‘Čačanski Rubin’ (10.17% and 9.15%, respectively). Also, 'Čačanski Rubin' was the cultivar with the highest content of sucrose, while 'Nevena', Šumadinka' and 'Sofija' had higher contents of proteins compared to the other cultivars studied. In contrast, the highest level of titratable acidity was obtained in 'Heimanns K.W.', and the highest fruit pH in 'Čačanski Rubin'. The present results indicate that tested sour cherry cultivars due to the numerous positive physical and chemical characteristics deserve a place in intensive orchards and breeding programs as cultivars with enhanced nutritional value of fruits.

The present results indicate that tested sour cherry cultivars due to the numerous positive physical and chemical characteristics deserve a place in intensive orchards and breeding programs as cultivars with enhanced nutritional value of fruits.",

AB - Eleven plum landraces (‘G-1’ to ‘G-11’) of unknown origin were sampled and analyzed as single trees on their own roots in orchards of the western Serbia region during 2020/21. The investigation included the most important agronomic traits such as harvest date, fruit and stone weight, fruit dimensions, surface area, soluble solids, and total acids as well as the ratio between them, total phenols and total anthocyanins, antioxidant activity, and field resistance to ‘Sharka’ disease (Plum pox virus). The collected material showed a wide range of variability in the studied properties. The investigated plum genotypes ripened between the 30th of July (‘G-1’) and the 15th of September (‘G-11’). The ‘G-3’ was characterized by the largest fruit (37.12 g), while the smallest fruit was found in ‘G-4’ and ‘G-5’ (11.76 g; 13.39 g). In terms of the fruit's chemical composition, the best results were obtained in ‘G-5’ and ‘G-11’ characterized by the highest content of soluble solids (20.45%; 21.10%) and the ratio between soluble solids and total acids (21.73; 30.14). The smallest content of soluble solids (14.25%) was found in ‘G-9’, while ‘G-3’ and ‘G-4’ had the smallest ratio between soluble solids and total acids (8.53; 9.59) due to the high value of total acids content (1.94%; 2.09%). The genotype ‘G-2’ was characterized by the highest content of total phenols (197.50 mg GAE 100 g-1 FW) and antioxidant activity (63.26%), while the value for total anthocyanins was highest in ‘G-5’ and ‘G-8’ (17.32 and 18.93 mg C3G 100 g-1 FW, respectively). The lowest level of bioactive compounds was found in ‘G-3’. Regarding the field resistance to ‘Sharka’ disease, the assessed genotypes can be divided into three groups, without symptoms (‘G-2’ to ‘G-4’, ‘G-6’ and ‘G-7’), with minor symptoms (‘G-1’, ‘G-8’ and ‘G-9’) and with moderate symptoms (‘G-5’, ‘G-10’ and ‘G-11’).

AB - Despite Serbia being among the world's largest producers of plums with about 5% of production,
seedlings of 'Mirobalan' (Prunus cerasifera Ehrh.), characterized by a number of disadvantages,
represent the most commonly used plum rootstock. Considering the intensification of plum
production this study was aimed to characterize by yield and content of sugars and organic acids,
as well as phenols in plum cultivar 'Čačanska Lepotica' grafted on four vegetative rootstocks
(three medium vigor 'Docera 6', 'Wavit' and 'Weiwa' and one low vigor rootstock 'Dospina 235')
during two years (2017‒2018). According to the analyses of primary metabolites, the harvest
season effect was more predominant than the rootstock. Fruits harvested in 2017 were the best
results for total sugars and sugars/acids ratio (94.0 g/kg FW and 5.6, respectively) while fruits
harvested in 2018 had significantly higher phenol content (253.8 mg/kg FW). The dominant
phenolic compounds in plum fruits were phenolic acids and flavanols, while flavonols and
anthocyanins were determined in a lower concentration. The results demonstrate a significant
influence of rootstock on phenolic content in plum fruits. All tested phenolic groups were
significantly higher in the fruit of 'Čačanska Lepotica' grafted on 'Docera 6' and 'Dospina 235' in
both tested years, except the content of flavonols and anthocyanins in grafting combination with
rootstocks 'Wavit' and 'Weiwa' in 2017. In order to improve the intensity of plum growing and
the nutritional quality of fruits, 'Docera 6', a rootstock with hypersensitive resistance to Plum pox
virus (PPV), can be recommended for further expansion in agroecological conditions of southeast
Europe.

AB - In recent years, the demand for strawberries on the world market is constantly increasing, primarily due to their unique taste and health benefits. Fruits produced without the use of agrochemicals, which are at the same time safer, more nutritious and healthier, are in particular demand. These forced researchers to identify ecologically safe techniques that can satisfy consumer preferences. Although many aspects of environmental methodologies in strawberry cultivation have already been investigated, the application of biosafe fertilizers and/or pesticides which greatly contribute to healthy food is still rare. Based on this background, a new formula of the liquid vermicompost-based product (VCMo), consisting of microbes from Trichoderma, Bacillus, Pseudomonas and Azotobacter genera, suitable for both nutrition and protection, has been developed at the Fruit Research Institute Čačak (Republic of Serbia). Its effectiveness was assessed by measuring the degree of gray mould (Botrytis cinerea Pers.) infection and changes in quality (fruit weight and dimensions, total phenolic content and antioxidant activity) of strawberry fruits. In addition, its efficacy has been compared to the biodegradable product (FitoBotryfun) and a combination of synthetic fungicides (Switch+ Signum). As regards the control of gray mould, the highest efficacy was achieved by the Switch+ Signum application, followed by VCMo, while the efficacy of FitoBotryfun was less satisfactory. On the other hand, the highest quality of the strawberry fruits was observed in VCMo treatment followed by FitoBotryfun and Switch+ Signum. The obtained results suggest that VCMo can be an alternative to chemical-based fungicides in B. cinerea control programme of strawberries. All this together qualifies VCMo as a promising biological treatment that meets the needs of both growers and consumers.

AB - The demand for food is expected to increase by up to 70% by 2050 due to the projected population of over 10 billion people. Conventional agricultural methods, which imply the application of synthetic fertilizers and pesticides, are unlikely to meet this demand. Therefore, there is a need for the intensification of agricultural production. However, the excessive use of synthetic fertilizers and chemically synthesized pesticides can have adverse effects on the environment, soil fertility, crop yields, human health, and food quality. Therefore, harmonizing plant nutrition and protection through sustainable principles in agriculture represents a major goal and challenge for agriculture in the 21st century. Innovative, sustainable, and environmentally safe solutions and bio-rational technologies such as the use of fertilizers and pesticides of biological origin need to be introduced. This paper provides a review of recent achievements in orchard nutrition and protection management by introducing a new product based on liquid biofertilizer. This biofertilizer is derived from vermicompost and enriched with different strains of beneficial microorganisms from Azotobacter, Bacillus, Pseudomonas, and Trichoderma genera, which contribute to increasing productivity, quality characteristics, and economic efficiency of production while simultaneously respecting ecological and health safety standards. The new formula includes a complete technological procedure and has been developed at the Fruit Research Institute, Čačak in the Republic of Serbia.

AB - Lack of appropriate fertilisers is a bottleneck in organic agriculture, which can lead to reduced yields and, consequently, reduced profitability. Therefore, the aim of this study was to develop a new formulation of a vermicompost-based biopreparation (VCMo) and to investigate the effects of this product on the composition of primary and secondary metabolites of the fruit of organically cultivated strawberries (Fragaria × ananassa Duch. cv Senga Sengana). Sugars, organic acids and phenolic compounds in strawberry fruit cultivated with three application modes of VCMo (rhizosphere inoculation (RI); combination of rhizosphere inoculation and foliar spraying (RI+FS); and foliar spraying (FS)) and a control (untreated soil and plants) were characterised and quantified by HPLC with a refractive index detector for sugars and organic acids, and HPLCDAD-MSn for phenolic compounds. Strawberry fruit obtained from plants exposed to the combined application of rhizosphere inoculation and foliar spraying showed the highest concentrations of total sugars and total organic acids. There were no significant differences between the methods of VMCo application for concentrations of phenolic acids, but rhizosphere inoculation on its own resulted in the highest total concentration of the five groups of flavonoids identified (anthocyanins, flavanols, flavanones, flavonols and flavones). The results of the study suggested that rhizosphere inoculation with VCMo on its own or in combination with foliar spraying could be а useful tool for organic strawberry cultivation, contributing to the production of healthy and good quality fruit at the same time as providing opportunities to reduce environmental pollution.

The results of the study suggested that rhizosphere inoculation with VCMo on its own or in combination with foliar spraying could be а useful tool for organic strawberry cultivation, contributing to the production of healthy and good quality fruit at the same time as providing opportunities to reduce environmental pollution.",

AB - The research aimed to establish the antimicrobial activity of plum fruits in inhibiting the development of selected bacteria and fungi strains. Eight plum cultivars (‘Čačanska Rana’, ‘Čačanska Lepotica’, ‘Timočanka’, ‘Čačanska Najbolja’, ‘Mildora’, ‘Krina’, ‘Čačanska Rodna’ and ‘Stanley’) from two different growing locations (300 and 550 m altitudes) were included in the study. Antimicrobial activity of the plum extract was determined using the microdilution method (minimum inhibitory concentration – MIC). The antimicrobial activity significantly varied among the tested cultivars and altitudes. The cultivars showed different antibacterial activity, with MIC values ranging from 21.97 to 195.31 μg ml-1 and antifungal activity ranging from 21.97 to 63.49 μg ml-1. Depending on the altitude, antibacterial activity in the plum fruits ranged from 19.53 to 260.41 μg ml-1, and antifungal activity varied from 19.53 to 97.67 μg ml-1. In general, plum fruits showed the highest activity against Escherichia coli and Aspergillus niger. The obtained results suggested that plum fruits have significant antimicrobial activity, which can contribute to the global acceptance of plums as a functional food.

AB - Black fruits, especially blackberries and black currants, are highly appreciated by consumers due to their nutraceutical properties, which have reported health benefits. This study aimed to assess the fruit quality of the blackberry (cv. ‘Čačanska Bestrna’) and black currant (cv. ‘Čačanska Crna’) created at the Fruit Research Institute, Čačak (Republic of Serbia) by evaluating basic quality parameters (fruit weight, soluble solids), and content of primary (sugars and organic acids) and secondary (phenolic compounds) metabolites. Additionally, the study examined the quality of frozen and long-term frozen storage (6, 9, and 12 months). The results showed that ‘Čačanska Crna’ contained a high level of total soluble solids (15.23 Bx), sugars (93.06 mg g-1), and a high index of sweetness (159.48) as well as a high content of acids (34.35 mg g-1) in the fruit. Both species were found to contain forty-seven phenolic compounds, including phenolic acids, flavanols, and anthocyanins, analyzed using high performance liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry (HPLC-MS). ‘Čačanska Bestrna’ had the highest amounts of phenolic acids (66.85 mg 100 g-1) and flavanols (53.99 mg 100 g-1), whereas ‘Čačanska Crna’ showed the highest levels of flavonols (8.57 mg 100 g-1) and anthocyanins (139.11 mg 100 g-1). Furthermore, the study revealed that anthocyanins were the most abundant phenolic group in both blackberries and black currants, and their levels remained constant during frozen storage. The sugar content in both species remained unchanged, while the acid concentration increased over time in blackberries but remained consistent in black currants. Overall, the findings highlight the superior phenolic content, particularly anthocyanins, of the cultivars with black fruits selected in Serbia. These cultivars have great commercial potential for the fresh market and processing. Moreover, the study suggests that frozen storage is an effective method for preserving their quality and beneficial properties.

AB - This research evaluated the effect of climatic factors (air temperature and precipitation) on the polyphenol profile and potential antioxidant and antimicrobial properties in the berries of three black currant cultivars over 8 years. During berry formation and ripening, low air temperatures and high precipitation amounts had a stimulating effect on the biosynthesis of phenolics, anthocyanins, flavonols, phenolic acids and total antioxidant capacity. Conversely, moderate temperatures and low precipitation amounts promoted the accumulation of flavonoids, gallotannins, condensed tannins and antioxidative activity. Antimicrobial activity varied from 21.70 to 203.99 mu g mL(-1), depending on the year. Principal component analysis (PCA) suggested that the biochemical profile of the berry was determined not only by the genetic predisposition of the cultivar but also by climatic factors. A significant correlation was observed among polyphenolic compounds in the berries. This study demonstrates that climate factors have an important effect on the nutrient content in berries, which should be considered when choosing the location for black currant planting.

AB - An experiment was conducted during eight years (2012–2019) to examine the effect of climatic variations (air temperature and precipitation) on the nutritional quality of berries of three black currant cultivars (‘Ben Lomond’, ‘Titania’ and ‘Čačanska Crna’). HPLC was used for the determination of sugars and organic acids extracted from berries, while ascorbic acid and minerals were evaluated by spectrophotometry. Results indicated that the chemical profile of black currants varied among cultivars. ‘Ben Lomond’ and ‘Čačanska Crna’ exhibited excellent chemical characteristics of the berries, primarily in terms of their high sugars and organic acids content, but ‘Čačanska Crna’ stood out for its highest values of ascorbic acid. Also, seasonal variations caused by temperatures and precipitation affected the biosynthesis of primary metabolites in berries. The heavier precipitation and lower temperatures during berry formation and ripening promoted the accumulation of organic acids and ascorbic acid, as well as minerals P and Fe. Conversely, moderate temperatures and rainfall amounts promoted the synthesis of soluble solids, sugars and proteins, whereas higher temperatures and lower precipitation amount enhanced accumulation of the other tested minerals. PCA analysis showed the correlations among the cultivar/year interactions and identified group patterns. The results showed that the chemical properties of black currant not only depend on the genetic predisposition of the cultivar but also on climatic conditions like air temperature and precipitation, which have an important effect on nutrient metabolism in plants and promote biosynthesis and accumulation of primary metabolites in berries.

AB - Mulching is an important agricultural technique that is not widely used in perennial fruit orchards, especially not in black currant plantings. Therefore, the aim of this study was to compare two mulched (sawdust and black foil) and un-mulched soils (bare fallow) in black currant orchard. The research determined soil physical and chemical characteristics and some properties of black currant (bush volume, yield per unit area, berry weight, soluble solids content). During five-year research, it was found that in all cultivation systems, there were changes in soil characteristics, as well as in the tested properties of black currant. Mulching with sawdust had a stimulating effect on nutrient content (humus, N, P2O5 and K2O) in soil and resulted in a stable soil water regime and steadily low soil temperatures throughout the growing season compared to the other two cultivation systems, which directly led to an increase in the bush volume and yield per unit area. On the other hand, moderate soil temperature and low soil moisture during the growing season, as recorded on bare fallow, promoted the increase in berry weight. In contrast, the soil covered with foil had a positive effect on improved soil mechanical properties, especially an increase in silt fractions and contributed to higher soil temperature and moisture, which caused higher accumulation and synthesis of soluble solids in berries. Generally, the present results suggested that cultivation systems significantly influenced soil characteristics and certain properties of black currant, which should be considered when choosing an appropriate location for establishing black currant orchards.

abstract = "Mulching is an important agricultural technique that is not widely used in perennial fruit orchards, especially not in black currant plantings. Therefore, the aim of this study was to compare two mulched (sawdust and black foil) and un-mulched soils (bare fallow) in black currant orchard. During five-year research, it was found that in all cultivation systems, there were changes in soil characteristics, as well as in the tested properties of black currant.
