AB - Effect of pre-harvest calcium chloride (CaCl2) treatment on fruit quality attributes of three apple cultivars (‘Golden Delicious Reinders®’, ‘Granny Smith’ and ‘Red Chief ’) at harvest and after two and four months of cold storage during two consecutive years was studied. Trees were sprayed four times starting from the beginning of June at 20-day intervals. After harvest, fruits were stored in a regular atmosphere (RA) for further analysis. Measurements included fruit weight, weight loss, firmness, total soluble solids (TSS), titrable acidity (TA), total sugars (TS), TS/TA, total phenolic content (TPC) and antioxidant activity (AA). CaCl2 had a positive impact on fruit firmness of all cultivars in both years. Higher values of TSS and TS of ‘Golden Delicious Reinders®’ were
determined in CaCl2 treatment in both years. TSS, TS and TS/TA were increased by prolonging storage in ‘Red Chief’ in CaCl2 treatment and control, in both years. TSS and TS proved similarly stable in ‘Granny Smith’ during storage in CaCl2 treatment and control in the second year of examination, but a decrease of TA and TS/TA has been detected in both years of storage. The AA of cultivars ‘Golden Delicious Reinders®’ and ‘Red Chief’ was stronger affected by the storage compared to CaCl2 treatment. Through a comprehensive analysis of apple cultivars it can be concluded that pre-harvest application of CaCl2 in cultivars ‘Golden Delicious Reinders®’ and ‘Red Chief’ can be used to improve fruit quality during storage.

AB - Apple (Malus×domestica Borkh.) is one of the most represented and economically most
important fruit species. There are a number of calcium-containing products on the market that
can be applied before or after harvest to delay fruit maturation with no negative effects on
consumers. The paper also presents the results of a study on the effects of a foliar application
of calcium chloride (ʻStopitʼ) on the physical and basic fruit quality properties of the apple
cultivar ʻGlosterʼ. The study was conducted for two consecutive years, and the changes in
fruit weight, firmness, dimensions, soluble solids, total sugars, and organic acids content were
studied during harvest and storage periods of 60 and 120 days in a regular cold chamber.
Fruits treated with calcium chloride had higher fruit weight, height, width, firmness, total
sugars, and ratio between total sugars and organic acids (206.0 g, 70.6 mm, 77.8 mm, 7.6 kg
cm-2, 10.4%, and 21.4, respectively). The storage period had a significant effect on all fruit
parameters studied, except for the content of total acids. The highest values of physical
properties were mesured at the moment of storage, soluble solids content after 60 days (13.2°
Brix), and total sugars (10.9%) and sugar/acid ratio (22.3) after 120 days of storage. Foliar
application of CaCl2 during vegetation can be an effective measure to avoid losses in apple
fruit quality during storage in the regular cold chamber.

AB - Decades-long cherry breeding work at Fruit Research Institute, Čačak (FRI), implies the use as a main method planned hybridization within P. avium and P. cerasus. Combined with the selection from the natural populations, the method resulted in realization of two sweet cherry ('Asenova Rana' and 'Čarna') and five sour cherry cultivars ('Čačanski Rubin', 'Šumadinka', 'Sofija', 'Nevena' and 'Iskra'), three hybrids in the procedure of recognition, and numerous being intensively studied. Current sour cherry breeding work is based on the use of domestic genotypes, well adapted to the environmental conditions of the area (either obtained by planned hybridization or indigenous), and foreign genotypes – tolerant to diseases, with high cropping potential and good fruit quality. Different aspects of reproductive biology in cherries – flowering phenology, pollen tube growth in vitro and in vivo (pollen tube growth dynamics, pollen-pistil interactions in the style and ovary), cytoembryology (ovule development stage, viability of ovule and embryo sac, early embryogenesis), are among the main research activities at FRI. Within the past decade, the research on gametofitic self-incompatibility (GSI) in cherries has been advanced by identification of S-haplotypes in cultivars, landraces and hybrids using consensus, specific and dCAPS primers to reveal S-RNase and SFB functional/non-functional variants. Besides the GSI, other possible types of pollen-pistil interactions have also been considered, primarily in the context of temperature conditions during the flowering. Nowadays, within the CherrySeRB project whose FRI is the leading institution, characterization of the indigenous genotype potential for desirable reproductive properties and defining ʻgood reproductive behaviour cherry modelʼ that can face warmer temperature conditions during the flowering are in focus. The main CherrySeRB idea is connection of production challenges arising from climate change and the richness of Serbian and Balkan cherry germplasm that is still unused enough, which represents a novelty in breeding approach, applicable to other fruit species.

AB - Sour cherry (Prunus cerasus L.) is one of the main perennial fruit crops in the Republic of Serbia (RS), whose average production of 117,595 tonnes (2012-2021) ranking it as the third most widely grown after plum and apple. As for the sour cherry assortment structure in the RS, clones of ‘Oblačinska’ are the most widespread (over 60%), while the remaining part comprises large-fruited foreign cultivars, as well as domestic ‘Šumadinka’ released within the breeding programme of the Fruit Research Institute, Čačak (FRI). As the tetraploid species, sour cherry includes both self-incompatible (SI) and self-compatible (SC) genotypes, which are characterised by more complex genetics of SI/SC. Therefore, developing of SC sour cherry cultivars is of high priority within FRI breeding work and worldwide. The aim of this study was to identify the S-haplotypes in two autochthonous (clones of ‘Oblačinska’ and ‘Cigančica’), four developed within FRI breeding programme (‘Iskra’, ‘Nevena’, ‘Sofija’ and ‘Šumadinka’) and one promising (‘GV-10’) sour cherry genotypes originated from the RS. The use of the polymerase chain reaction (PCR) method with three different consensus primer pairs for the first and the second introns of S-RNase, as well as primers specific for both S-RNase and SFB alleles, in combination with genetic tests to identify the pollen-part and stylar-part mutants (using derived cleaved amplified polymorphic sequence assay ‒ dCAPS), enabled identification of the S-haplotypes in the assessed sour cherry genotypes. In total, eight S-haplotypes (S1, S4, S6, S9, S13, S26, S35 and S36) or their non-functional variants were identified. In the investigated sour cherry genotypes, non-functional variant S36b2 was the most frequent (21.4%). The results generated in this study provide a valuable resource for design crosses in future breeding work which maximize the number of SC seedlings, and for orchard management in the efficient high-yielding fruit production.

AB - Wild Malus Miller species offer diversity essential for future breeding programmes that are not available within domestic and foreign apple cultivars. These species may provide novel alleles not just for disease resistance, but also for various desirable traits. Predicting and optimising the quality of stored apples and maximising their shelf life are becoming a major challenge worldwide. Ethylene regulates a broad spectrum of developmental and physiological processes in apple (including fruit ripening) and being perceived through the family of receptors, among which Ethylene Receptor 1 (ETR1) is one of the Subfamily I receptors, encoded by ETR1 gene. This study aimed to identify the ETR1 alleles in nine Malus Miller species from the ex situ collection of the Fruit Research Institute, Čačak, Republic of Serbia. The ETR1 alleles were revealed by polymerase chain reaction (PCR) and additional restriction analysis of amplified PCR product (~5,000 bp) with RsaI, AluI and HinfI enzymes. Upon comparison of the observed polymorphisms, six alleles of ETR1 gene (a, b, c, d, f and g) were identified, among which f and g alleles were revealed in this study for the first time. Further characterisation of the novel alleles will be performed through cloning and sequencing of the corresponding DNA fragments. The polymorphisms observed upon PCR amplification and subsequent digestion with aforementioned restriction enzymes were generated in six allelic constitutions for ETR1 gene ‒ bb (one species), bd (one species), bf (one species), b,a/c (three species), ff (two species) and g,a/c/d/g (one species).

AB - Dozrevanje klimakteričnog ploda jabuke praćeno je naglim povećanjem brzine respiracije i produkcije etilena. U radu su predstavljeni rezultati proučavanja alelnog polimorfizma ETR1 gena kod devet ex situ kolekcionisanih vrsta roda Malus: Malus × atrosanguinea (Spaeth) Schneid., Malus floribunda Siebold ex Van Houtte, Malus hupehensis (Pamp.) Rehder, Malus × micromalus Makino, Malus niedzwetzkyana Dieck, Malus prunifolia (Willd.) Borkh. var. microcarpa, Malus prunifolia (Willd.) Borkh. var. xanthocarpa, Malus sargentii Rehder i Malus sieboldii (Regel) Rehder. Dalja karakterizacija novoidentifikovanih f i g alela biće sprovedena njihovim kloniranjem i sekvenciranjem.

AB - The aim of the present research was to evaluate the effects of foliar calcium chloride spraying on postharvest quality of fruits of five apple cultivars (‘Gloster’, ‘Golden Delicious Reinders®’, ‘Granny Smith’, ‘Morren’sJonagored®’ and ‘Red Chief’) at harvest and during storage (2, 4, 6 and 8 months) in cold storage with normal atmosphere. Measurements of fruit weight, firmness, total soluble solids (TSS), titrable acidity (TA), total sugars (TS) and TS/TA ratio were performed. Significantly higher fruit weight was found in cultivar ‘Morren’sJonagored®’ (209.16 g) at harvest time, while this cultivar had low TSS (10.63%) and the lowest firmness (8.56 kg/cm2 ) compared to the other tested cultivars. Among tested cultivars TSS was the highest in ‘Golden Delicious Reinders®’ (12.01%) and ‘Granny Smith’ (12.38%) which beside cultivar ‘Red Chief’ (11.53 kg/cm2 ), had the most firm fruit (10.94 kg/cm2 ). In addition to the high content of TSS, the cultivar ‘Golden Delicious Reinders®’ had a significantly higher content of TS and TS/TA ratio related to other examined cultivars. Results showed that fruit weight, firmness, and TSS content increased in fruit treated with calcium chloride as compared to control fruit. However, these parameters decreased by prolonging the storage time, except TSS content which was similar in all storage times. Moreover, during storage, the higher level of TA (0.34%) and TS (10.23%) was observed in fruit sprayed with calcium fertilizer. However, the content of TA and TS was decreasing during storage, and the highest TS/TA ratio was recorded in the last storage time (after 6 and 8 months of storage). Generally, the quality of apple fruit treated with calcium-chloride was better than those untreated in almost all parameters. In order to improve the quality of apple fruit during storage, the use of calcium chloride-based fertilizers may be recommended.

The aim of the present research was to evaluate the effects of foliar calcium chloride spraying on postharvest quality of fruits of five apple cultivars (‘Gloster’, ‘Golden Delicious Reinders®’, ‘Granny Smith’, ‘Morren’sJonagored®’ and ‘Red Chief’) at harvest and during storage (2, 4, 6 and 8 months) in cold storage with normal atmosphere. AB - Loss of firmness is one of the major restraints for postharvest handling and adequate storage of plum fruits. In order to improve the fruit quality various pre- and postharvest treatments could be applied. The aim of this research was to evaluate the effect of foliar sprays containing calcium on postharvest quality of 'Stanley' fruits during two consecutive years. Three commercial sprays containing calcium were used in the experiment. The first spray contained calcium and boron, the second one calcium and phosphorus, whilst the third one contained calcium. The treatments involved four foliar applications, ten days after petal fall at 2-day intervals. Unsprayed trees represented the control. All treatments significantly increased fruit firmness at harvest. However, no such effect was observed after four weeks of cold storage although fruits from treated trees had higher content of calcium. At harvest, fruits from the trees sprayed with calcium and phosphorus had significantly higher content of soluble solids, total acids and protopectin in comparison with two other treatments and control fruits. Neither fruit weight nor dimensions were affected by any of preharvest foliar treatments. The lowest weight loss after storage was recorded in fruits treated with the spray containing only calcium. The content of total acids, potassium and soluble solids depended on treatment, year and their interaction, both at harvest and after storage. There was a significant positive correlation between the fruit firmness at harvest and content of potassium and protopectin. However, firmness of fruits after storage was significantly positively correlated not only with the content of potassium, but also with the content of calcium.

AB - Ethylene is the gaseous phytohormone, which regulates a broad spectrum of developmental and physiological processes in apple, including fruit ripening. The level of ethylene in climacteric apple fruit is determined by the activity of two enzymes that are directly involved in the ethylene biosynthetic pathway: ACC synthase (the ACS gene) and ACC oxidase (the ACO gene). In apple, ACS1 and ACO1 are predominantly expressed in the ripening fruit tissue. Ethylene is perceived through the family of receptors, among which ETR1 receptor (the ETR1 gene) is one of the receptors of Subfamily I. This work is aimed at identifying the ACS1, ACO1 and ETR1 alleles in six indigenous apple genotypes from the ex situ collection of the Fruit Research Institute, Cacak, Republic of Serbia. The alleles were revealed by polymerase chain reaction (PCR) and additional restriction analysis of PCR products for ACO1 (with BamH1 and RsaI) and ETR1 genes (with RsaI, AluI and HinfI). Two alleles of ACS1 gene (ACS1-1 and ACS1-2), three alleles of ACO1 gene (a, b and c) and four alleles of ETR1 gene (a, b, c and d) were identified. The polymorphisms observed upon PCRs and subsequently digestion with restriction enzymes were generated in two genotypes for ACS1 (ACS1-1/1 and ACS1-1/2), three genotypes for ACO1 (aa, ab and ac) and three allelic constitutions for ETR1 gene (aa, b,a/c and d, a/d).

AB - Five plum hybrids (38/62/70, IV/63/81, 32/21/87, 34/41/87 and 22/17/87) and newly released cultivar 'Nada', obtained by planned hybridisation and singled out within breeding programme at Fruit Research Institute, Cacak, were assessed for the main physical (fruit and stone weight and flesh percentage), chemical (soluble solids content, total and inverted sugars content, sucrose content, total acids content, pH value of fruit juice, ratio of soluble solids and total acids content and ratio of total sugars and total acids content) and sensorial (attractiveness, taste, aroma and consistency) traits compared with the standard cultivar 'Cacanska Lepotica'. Results showed that the studied plum genotypes differed significantly in all of the assessed traits. Regarding the physical features, the best results were shown by hybrid 38/62/70, which had the highest fruit weight (56.92 g) and flesh percentage (96.91%), as well as by the new cultivar 'Nada', for which a larger fruit was observed in comparison to the standard (45.54 g and 42.24 g, respectively). Also, 'Nada' had better sensorial properties such as attractiveness, taste, aroma and consistency in relation to the other promising hybrids and the standard cultivar. From the aspect of all the studied sensorial characteristics, in addition to 'Nada', only hybrid 38/62/70 was aligned with the standard cultivar. Out of the studied genotypes, late ripening hybrid 22/17/87 had the best values of parameters of fruit chemical composition such as the soluble solids content (17.01%), total and inverted sugars contents (12.31% and 8.96%, respectively). The highest sucrose content (3.39%), pH value of fruit juice (3.51), as well as the highest ratio between soluble solids and total acids content (43.72) and ratio between total sugars and total acids content (32.58) were found in cultivar 'Nada'. The highest total acids content (1.42%) was recorded in hybrid 32/21/87. Compared to 'Cacanska Lepotica', the same or better results in terms of the fruit chemical composition were determined in cultivar 'Nada' and hybrids 34/41/87 and 22/17/87. The study revealed existence of significant correlations between individual studied parameters of the fruit physical, chemical and sensorial properties.

abstract = "Five plum hybrids (38/62/70, IV/63/81, 32/21/87, 34/41/87 and 22/17/87) and newly released cultivar 'Nada', obtained by planned hybridisation and singled out within breeding programme at Fruit Research Institute, Cacak, were assessed for the main physical (fruit and stone weight and flesh percentage), chemical (soluble solids content, total and inverted sugars content, sucrose content, total acids content, pH value of fruit juice, ratio of soluble solids and total acids content and ratio of total sugars and total acids content) and sensorial (attractiveness, taste, aroma and consistency) traits compared with the standard cultivar 'Cacanska Lepotica'. The study revealed existence of significant correlations between individual studied parameters of the fruit physical, chemical and sensorial properties.",

AB - Plum cultivar 'Pozna Plava' was developed at the Fruit Research Institute, Cacak, and released as a new cultivar in 2008. This plum cultivar bears poorly and irregularly, resulting in very low fruit set. Therefore, the occurrence of specific behaviour of growing pollen tubes in the ovary was studied over a three-year period, in three pollination variants (self-, cross- and open). The cross-pollination was performed using the pollen of 'Cacanska Najbolja', 'Hanita' and 'Presenta' plum cultivars. Growth of pollen tubes was observed by means of fluorescent microscopy. The analysis was conducted taking into consideration whether or not the pollen tube has penetrated into the nucellus. Presence of specific behaviour of growing pollen tubes in the ovary was observed in all pollination variants. Atypical pollen tube growth was recorded in the locyle of the ovary as well as in the region of the obturator, the micropyle and the embryo sac. The largest percentage of atypical pollen tube growth in all pollination variants, before and after the penetration into the nucellus was recorded in the obturator and micropyle region. In the open pollination variant, the ovaries showing this specific behaviour of growing pollen tubes, were noted in only one year. Cross- and self-pollination variant showed the existence of specific behaviour of growing pollen tubes in all regions of the ovule, including the embryo sac (except in self-pollination). Only in cross-pollination variant, correlation-regression analysis has shown that specific behaviour of growing pollen tubes did affect the pollen tube penetrating into the nucellus.

AB - Fruit skin colour in pears, which has become variable due to natural hybridization and positive selection, has received particular attention in new breeding programmes worldwide. Specifically, pear cultivars with a red blushed or completely red fruit skin are required. This paper presents the results of a two-year study focused on the phenological properties (flowering and ripening time), pomological (morphometric, chemical and organoleptic) characteristics and productivity of the newly released pear cultivar 'Andelija'. This dark red skinned pear cultivar is originated from the crossing combination 'Starkrimson' x 'Colouree de Juillet', and was bred at the Fruit Research Institute, Cacak. A standard cultivar used in this study was 'Starkrimson'. Regarding the beginning of flowering time, both cultivars were medium. The ripening time of 'Andelija' was mid-August, averagely five days before 'Starkrimson'. Compared to the standard, 'Andelija' had significantly higher average values for yield (5.90 kg tree(-1)), soluble solids (13.78%), total sugar (8.89%) and inverted sugar (7.90%). In contrast, significantly lower values for mean fruit weight (146.84 g), fruit height (78.32 mm), fruit width (56.52 mm), total acids (0.13%) and sucrose content (0.94%) were found in 'Andelija'. Based on the overall evaluation of organoleptic traits, 'Andelija' exhibited better fruit attractiveness and aroma. Owing to the high quality, attractiveness, excellent taste and exceptional aroma of the fruit, 'Andelija' is recommended for commercial production as a dessert cultivar, and can expand the list of cultivars which have the potential to be used as parents in pear breeding programmes.

AB - The paper presents the two-year results of research regarding the impact of calcium chloride (ʻStopitʼ) on changes in morphometric properties of the fruit, firmness and the soluble solids content (SSC) in apple cv ʻRed Chiefʼ, at harvest and during storage of fruits (60 and 120 days) in the regular cold chamber. Foliar treatments were performed in four replications during vegetation (on June 7th, July 2nd, July 20th, August 15th – in 2018; June 14th, July 5th, July 26th, August 16th – in 2019). The obtained results indicate that fruit weight was significantly influenced by the calcium treatment and storage duration, while fruit dimensions varied under influence of storage duration only. The firmness and content of soluble solids was changing under the influence by all tested parameters and interaction effect of the study year and calcium treatment as well as storage duration. In the first year, fruits had higher weight (190.4 g), dimensions and firmness (12.4 N), whereas the SSC content was significantly higher in the second year of the study (16.2 °Brix). The fruits treated with calcium chloride had higher firmness (10.3 N) and soluble solids content (14.2 °Brix), especially after storage of 60 and 120 days (14.9 and 15.1 °Brix) compared to the soluble solids content in fresh fruits (11.5 °Brix). The stated results were confirmed by the highest values of the SSC recorded in the second year of the study after 60 days of fruit storage (17.9 °Brix). Based on the obtained results, it can be concluded that foliar application of calcium chloride during vegetation can be an effective measure with which losses in quality of apple fruit during storage in the regular cold chamber can be avoided with no negative effect on consumer acceptability.

AB - Pollen tubes growth rate in three fixation terms (72 h, 144 h and 240 h after pollination), as well as the initial fruit set of six promising plum genotypes developed at Fruit Research Institute, Čačak (the hybrids 38/62/70, IV/63/81, 32/21/87, 34/41/87, 22/17/87, and the cultivar ʻNada’) were investigated under self-, cross- (‘Čačanska Lepotica’ as pollenizer) and open pollination variants over the two years (2010/2011). Dynamics of pollen tubes growth varied depending on genotype, pollination variant and year. 72 h after pollination, location of the longest pollen tube was between the medium part of the style and the nucellus. Pollen tubes were predominantly observed in the ovary 144 h after pollination, while 240 h after pollination, penetration of pollen tube into the nucellus was not observed only in hybrid 32/21/87, in self-pollination variant. The highest amount of pistils with penetration into the nucellus 240 h after pollination was obtained in cross-pollination variant in all investigated genotypes and in both years, except in hybrids IV/63/81 and 22/17/87 in 2011 where this parameter achieved the highest value in self-pollination and open-pollination variants, respectively. The average value of initial fruit set varied from 1.08% (32/21/87, self-pollination) to 54.06% (‘Nada’, cross-pollination). The highest percentage of the initial fruit set for the majority of investigated genotypes recorded in the cross-pollination variant, except in hybrid 34/41/87, where the best result was obtained in self-pollination variant.

The highest percentage of the initial fruit set for the majority of investigated genotypes recorded in the cross-pollination variant, except in hybrid 34/41/87, where the best result was obtained in self-pollination variant.,

AB - The main objective of this paper was to evaluate biological properties and fruit quality of three newly plum cultivars ʻMildoraʼ, ʻKrinaʼ and ʻZlatkaʼ developed at Fruit Research Institute, Čačak intended for processing and standard cultivar ʻČačanska Rodnaʼ. The most important phenological and pomological properties, tree vigour and bearing as well as chemical characteristics of the fruit were studied. Flowering time of examined cultivars was similar and lasted during the second decade of April. Ripening time of these cultivars was recorded during the third decade of August. The largest tree vigour was found in ʻČačanska rodnaʼ and ʻKrinaʼ, whereas the smallest was found in ʻMildoraʼ. The highest yield per tree had ʻČačanska Rodnaʼ and the smallest had ʻMildoraʼ and ʻZlatkaʼ. Cultivar ʻČačanska Rodnaʼ was characterized with the largest fruit, whereas the smallest fruit was recorded in ʻMildoraʼ and ʻKrinaʼ. The highest values of chemical traits of fruit were found in ʻMildoraʼ. However, high fruit quality was determined in all four examined cultivars.

AB - This paper presents the two-year results (2018-2019) of research into the foliar fertilizer ʻStopitʼ on productivity and pomological properties of five introduced apple cultivars (ʻGloster 69ʼ, ʻGolden Reindersʼ, ʻGranny Smithʼ, ʻMorrens Jonagoredʼ and ʻRed Chiefʼ). Treatments were performed four times during vegetation, from the beginning of June until the mid of August, each 21 day. In harvest period of the investigated cultivars, morphometric characteristics, firmness and RSM content of fruit, as well as yield per unit area were determined. During the experiment, significant discrepancies between the investigated cultivars were found. The highest average weight (231.00 g), fruit dimension (height  71.41 mm and width  84.57 mm) and the content of RSM (14.52 °Brix) were found in the cultivar Morrens Jonagored, whereas the highest yield per unit area was found in the cultivar ʻRed Chiefʼ (2018 – 73.5 t ha-1 ; 2019 – 31.062 t ha-1). Regarding the years of study, by analyzing the results obtained, significantly higher average values of fruit mass and yield per unit area were recorded in the first year of study compared to the second experimental year, and as for the content of RSM, the reverse values were recorded (11,58% - 2018 i 14,13% - 2019). Application of ʻStopitʼ, which contains calcium (Ca) in the form of calcium chloride (CaCl2) (in its chemical composition), has shown a significant impact on the firmness of fruit in all investigated cultivars. The highest values of the fruit firmness were recorded in the cultivar ʻGranny Smithʼ in both years of study. Foliar fertilizer ʻStopitʼ can be recommended in apple orchards due to its stimulative impact on productive and pomological apple properties.

abstract = "This paper presents the two-year results (2018-2019) of research into the foliar fertilizer ʻStopitʼ on productivity and pomological properties of five introduced apple cultivars (ʻGloster 69ʼ, ʻGolden Reindersʼ, ʻGranny Smithʼ, ʻMorrens Jonagoredʼ and ʻRed Chiefʼ). Foliar fertilizer ʻStopitʼ can be recommended in apple orchards due to its stimulative impact on productive and pomological apple properties., и 14.13% - 2019 г.). AB - The paper presents the two-year results (2018–2019) of foliar product ʻStopitʼ application on pomological traits and storage of the apple cultivar ʻGranny Smithʼ. Foliar treatments in apple orchards were performed four times (on June 7th, July 2nd, July 20th, August 15th – in 2018; June 14th, July 5th, July 26th, August 16th – in 2019) during vegetation, that is, from the beginning of June until middle of August. At harvest as well as after storage of fruits (120 days) in a cooler at normal atmospheric pressure, fruit morphometric traits, firmness and soluble solids content of the cultivar ʻGranny Smithʼ and its control were studied comparatively. Analysis of the obtained results pointed to a statistically significant impact of storage period (except the soluble solids content), genotype (except fruit width) and agroecological conditions in the period of study as well as interaction effect of all variability factors on tested parameters. Values of the fruit mass ranged from 157.28 to 202.56 g, width from 60.11 to 71.72 mm, height from 71.30 to 80.03 mm and the content of soluble solids from 11.13 to 14.41 °Brix. Application of foliar product ʻStopitʼ containing calcium (Ca) in the form of calcium chloride (CaCl2) conditioned a more favorable effect on pomological traits of the control variant of cv ʻGranny Smithʼ, whereas during the study period, higher values were found in the first year. From the economic perspective of apple production, values of the fruit firmness as one of the most important parameters of fruit quality were lower after taking the fruits out of the cooler although the values in each variant were higher compared to control.

AB - The experiment evaluated the fruit characteristics (fruit weight, length, width and thickness, and stone weight) and contents of primary metabolites (soluble solids, total sugars, invert sugars, protein, titratable acidity and pH) in the fruit of plum cultivars. Research included fruits of thirteen plum cultivars developed at the Fruit Research Institute in Čačak (Serbia). During the experimental period (2016-2018), significant differences in the parameters tested were observed among the cultivars. The fruit weight ranged from 26.9 g to 67.4 g, and stone weight from 0.89 g to 2.27 g. The fruit and stone weight were the greatest in cultivar ‘Timočanka’, and the lowest in cultivar ‘Zlatka’. The highest value for average fruit length was obtained in ‘Timočanka’ (52.4 mm) and ‘Čačanska Rana’ (51.7 mm), fruit width in ‘Timočanka’(45.1 mm) and ‘Valerija’ (46.2 mm), while fruit thickness was the highest in ‘Valerija’ (44.6 mm). In terms of primary metabolites, cultivars ‘Krina’ (21.8%), ‘Mildora’ (21.9%), ‘Pozna Plava’ (21.2%) and ‘Valjevka’ (20.9%) had the highest content of soluble solids. The highest total and invert sugar contents were determined in ‘Mildora’, while ‘Mildora’, ‘Zlatka’ and ‘Valerija’ were found to have highest content of protein. In contrast, the highest values for titratable acidity and pH value were obtained in ‘Čačanska Lepotica’, and the lowest in ‘Mildora’ and ‘Nada’.

AB - In order to respond to consumers’ requirements, it is necessary to supply the market with high quality plum fruit. As the quality of the fruit starts to change immediately after harvest, cold storage is applied in order to maintain fruit characteristics, determined mainly in orchards. Since fruit quality and storage potential depend on cultivar, the aim of this research was to analyze and compare quality-related properties of ‘Čačanska Lepotica’ and ‘Empress’ before and after cold storage. Although examined cultivars have different ripening time, they are primarily grown for fresh consumption. Thus, all analyses were performed at harvest and after 28 days of cold storage (0–2 °C, 90–95% relative humidity), followed by a shelf life of three days at 20 °C. Fruit firmness, weight loss, susceptibility to Monilinia spp., soluble solids content, titratable acidity, antioxidant capacity, the concentrations of total phenolics, flavonoids and anthocyanins were monitored. After cold storage and subsequent shelf life, an increase in soluble solids content, antioxidant capacity, total phenolics and flavonoids were observed in both cultivars. Significant differences between fresh and stored plums were found in terms of fruit firmness. Fruit of ‘Čačanska Lepotica’ had higher content of soluble solids and anthocyanins and it was firmer in both analyses’ dates compared to fruit of ‘Empress’. However, its fruit was more susceptible to Monilinia spp. and had significantly higher weight loss than ‘Empress’ fruit.

However, its fruit was more susceptible to Monilinia spp. and had significantly higher weight loss than ‘Empress’ fruit.",

AB - Autochthonous apple cultivars are mainly grown in extensive orchards. Due to their resistance to pathogens, frost and summer droughts, they should be considered for more intensive organic and integrated production. Since autochthonous cultivars represent valuable source of genetic variability, they contribute to biodiversity and stability of ecosystems. Nevertheless, fruit of autochthonous cultivars is abundant in health protecting compounds. Thus, the objective of this study was to analyze the fruit quality of two autochthonous apple cultivars, ʻBobovec’ and ʻKolačara’, in comparison to ʻMorrens Jonagored’, one of the most commercially important cultivar. The obtained results indicate that examined autochthonous cultivars contained higher amount of soluble solids, total acids and total phenolics. Although ’Bobovec’ had the smallest fruit, it exhibited the highest antioxidant capacity and contained the highest concentration of health‐beneficial phenolic compounds.
