AB - Effect of pre-harvest calcium chloride (CaCl2) treatment on fruit quality attributes of three apple cultivars (‘Golden Delicious Reinders®’, ‘Granny Smith’ and ‘Red Chief ’) at harvest and after two and four months of cold storage during two consecutive years was studied. Trees were sprayed four times starting from the beginning of June at 20-day intervals. After harvest, fruits were stored in a regular atmosphere (RA) for further analysis. Measurements included fruit weight, weight loss, firmness, total soluble solids (TSS), titrable acidity (TA), total sugars (TS), TS/TA, total phenolic content (TPC) and antioxidant activity (AA). CaCl2 had a positive impact on fruit firmness of all cultivars in both years. Higher values of TSS and TS of ‘Golden Delicious Reinders®’ were
determined in CaCl2 treatment in both years. TSS, TS and TS/TA were increased by prolonging storage in ‘Red Chief’ in CaCl2 treatment and control, in both years. TSS and TS proved similarly stable in ‘Granny Smith’ during storage in CaCl2 treatment and control in the second year of examination, but a decrease of TA and TS/TA has been detected in both years of storage. The AA of cultivars ‘Golden Delicious Reinders®’ and ‘Red Chief’ was stronger affected by the storage compared to CaCl2 treatment. Through a comprehensive analysis of apple cultivars it can be concluded that pre-harvest application of CaCl2 in cultivars ‘Golden Delicious Reinders®’ and ‘Red Chief’ can be used to improve fruit quality during storage.

AB - Cultivation systems, especially mulching, play an important role in modifying soil
properties and have a significant effect on the chemical composition of fruits. Therefore,
the purpose of this study was to compare two cultivation systems (black plastic mulch and
bare soil) and determine the associated response of soil characteristics and biochemical
composition of chokeberry (cv. ‘Nero’) fruits. Soil properties and fruit phytochemical
profile were analyzed using established procedures. Antioxidant activity was determined
by several methods and cytotoxic activity was evaluated by MTT (3-[4,5-dimethylthiazol-
2-yl]-2,5 diphenyltetrazolium bromide) assay. Results indicated that both cultivation
systems caused changes in soil physical, chemical, and biological properties. Black plastic
mulch led to a greater decrease in clay fractions and most of the agrochemical properties
analyzed, and an increase in the numbers of fungi, compared to bare soil. Moreover,
mulch was effective in increasing soil temperature and conserving soil moisture by
preventing evaporation. This relationship of soil parameters, especially temperature and
moisture, under plastic mulch increased the content of certain bioactive phenolic
compounds (condensed tannins, gallotannins, and flavonols) and contributed to the strong
antioxidant and cytotoxic activity of chokeberry fruits. In contrast, bare soil favored
synthesis of other phenolic compounds (total phenols, flavonoids, anthocyanins, flavan-3-
ols and phenolic acids). Principal Component Analysis (PCA) revealed the effect of
cultivation systems on the biochemical composition of fruits. Results showed that
cultivation systems had a significant influence on soil characteristics in the chokeberry
orchard as well as on the biochemical composition of chokeberry fruits, which indicates
different pathways of metabolite synthesis under various cultivation practices.

AB - During the 2020 and 2021, the flowering phenophase and the most important characteristics of trees and fruits from fourteen in situ collected autochthonous plum genotypes grown in the area of western Serbia were investigated. The obtained results revealed that none of the collected genotypes showed low vigour, while the suckering tendency varied from low to extremely high, and yielding efficiency ranged from intermediate to good. All investigated genotypes were characterized with long blooming period with genotypes ʽŠ-GMNe/1ʼ and ʽŠ-UžK/5ʼ standing out for their very late onset of flowering. The tested genotypes had oval to elliptical fruit shape, small stone and medium flesh percentage. In terms of fruit size, the most of genotypes belonged to the small fruit group, a few were categorized as medium-sized fruit and only one genotype (ʽŠ-KrGP/2ʼ) fell into the large fruit category. Regarding the content of soluble solids, all tested genotypes showed good fruit quality. However, the genotype ʽŠ-ČaB/1ʼ stood out for having the highest levels of soluble solids, total and invert sugars indicating its distinct chemical composition.
One predstavljaju ogromno nacionalno bogatstvo i prirodni resurs koji nije u dovoljnoj meri istražen, a samim tim ni upotrebljen u adekvatne svrhe. Čak šta više, sve je prisutniji trend gubitka genetičkih resursa uzrokovan prenamenom zemljišta i uvođenjem u proizvodnju novijih sorti visoke rodnosti. Najznačajnije osobine stabla (bujnost, tendencija ka davanju izdanaka i koeficijent rodnosti ispitani su prema metodologiji navedenoj u međunarodno priznatom deskriptoru (Descriptor List for Plum and Allied Species, IBPGR), dok su fenološke (početak i kraj cvetanja) i pomološke osobine (masa ploda i koštice, randman ploda, dimenzije i indeks oblika ploda, sadržaj rastvorljive suve materije, ukupnih i invertnih šećera, sadržaj saharoze, ukupne kiseline i pH soka ploda) ispitane korišćenjem standardnih metoda.

AB - The impact of seven clonal rootstocks (Colt, MaxMa 14, Krymsk 6, Adara, Cigancica, Gisela 5, and Gisela 6) and one local plum (Myrobalan seedlings) on yield, fruit weight, leaf mineral content at 120 days after full bloom (DAFB), and deviation from optimum percentage (DOP) for macro- and microelements of the 'Sumadinka' sour cherry cultivar was evaluated in orchard conditions for two consecutive years. Results showed that yield was higher on Adara, Gisela 5 and MaxMa 14, intermediate on Cigancica and Krymsk 6, and lower on Colt, Gisela 6, and Myrobalan rootstocks. The average fruit weight (FW) was highest on Gisela 6 and lowest on Myrobalan seedlings, and FW was higher in the second year of the trial. Significant effect of rootstock was found on the leaf mineral analysis properties evaluated. Thus, Adara showed the best capacity to uptake and translocate to the scion leaves for most macro- and microelements, whereas the poorest nutritional status was, in general, obtained for Myrobalan, probably due to the incidence of graft incompatibility disturbances with the 'Sumadinka' cultivar. MaxMa 14 showed the best balanced nutritional values (sigma DOP) whereas the wider imbalance among elements was induced by Myrobalan seedlings. 'Krymsk 6' had, in general, lower values for most leaf mineral elements but higher sigma DOP macro and sigma DOP micro-indexes, showing more unbalanced nutritional index than the rest of rootstocks, with the exception of Myrobolan, and both of them followed by Colt. This work demonstrates that the rootstock strongly influences some important sour cherry attributes such as yield, fruit size, leaf macro- and microelements. The significant positive correlations between yield and mineral elements as Mn and Ca could indicate the interest of rootstocks having higher absorption and uptake for these elements in the present growing conditions. Considering their overall performance and tolerance to heavy and acidic soils, and according to the PCA results, Adara, MaxMa 14, and Gisela 6 appear as new promising rootstocks and can be recommended for sour cherries growing under similar soil conditions. We believe that sufficient information on the influence of different rootstocks on yield, fruit size, and leaf mineral composition of sour cherry would enable less ambiguous comparisons within and among them and ensure the best choice for growing a specific cultivar in similar environmental conditions.

Considering their overall performance and tolerance to heavy and acidic soils, and according to the PCA results, Adara, MaxMa 14, and Gisela 6 appear as new promising rootstocks and can be recommended for sour cherries growing under similar soil conditions. We believe that sufficient information on the influence of different rootstocks on yield, fruit size, and leaf mineral composition of sour cherry would enable less ambiguous comparisons within and among them and ensure the best choice for growing a specific cultivar in similar environmental conditions.",

AB - Raspberries are highly valued by consumers due to their nutraceutical properties, which have been associated with various health benefits. The aim of this study was to evaluate the differences in quality characteristics of fresh raspberry fruits and final products (jam and juice) collected from plantations under different agroecological conditions (three localities). The total phenolic content in raspberry fruits and products was quantified by the Folin-Ciocalteu method and the total anthocyanin content by the pH-differential method. In the same samples, eight elements (phosphate, iron, manganese, zinc, calcium, potassium, magnesium, and sodium) were determined using atomic absorption spectrophotometry. The productivity of red raspberry (Rubus idaeus L.) cultivar ‘Willamette’ was studied by examining the variation in the number of floricanes per espalier meter and per unit area as well as the variation in yield per cane and per unit area. The results showed that the highest yield was observed in the L2 locality (660.00 g per cane and 14,840 kg ha−1 of total area), while the lowest yield was recorded in the L3 one (519.67 g per cane and 11,779 kg ha−1 of total area). The amount of macro- and microelements in the soil and raspberry fruits varied between the localities with a higher nutrient content obtained in the L2 locality. The antioxidant capacity and total anthocyanin and phenolic content of the raspberry fruits were influenced by the cultivation area with the highest values of anthocyanins (63.45 mg cyn-3-glu 100 g−1 FW) and phenols (630.00 mg GAE 100 g−1 FW) observed in the L2 locality. The study also revealed that the processing of raspberry fruits into juice and jam had minimal effects on the antioxidant capacity and phenolic content. The findings highlight that ‘Willamette’ raspberries are a valuable source of bioactive compounds and minerals that contribute to their nutritional value and potential health benefits. Further research and optimisation of processing techniques are necessary to effectively preserve and enhance the bioactive compounds in processed raspberry products.

AB - Eleven plum landraces (‘G-1’ to ‘G-11’) of unknown origin were sampled and analyzed as single trees on their own roots in orchards of the western Serbia region during 2020/21. The investigation included the most important agronomic traits such as harvest date, fruit and stone weight, fruit dimensions, surface area, soluble solids, and total acids as well as the ratio between them, total phenols and total anthocyanins, antioxidant activity, and field resistance to ‘Sharka’ disease (Plum pox virus). The collected material showed a wide range of variability in the studied properties. The investigated plum genotypes ripened between the 30th of July (‘G-1’) and the 15th of September (‘G-11’). The ‘G-3’ was characterized by the largest fruit (37.12 g), while the smallest fruit was found in ‘G-4’ and ‘G-5’ (11.76 g; 13.39 g). In terms of the fruit's chemical composition, the best results were obtained in ‘G-5’ and ‘G-11’ characterized by the highest content of soluble solids (20.45%; 21.10%) and the ratio between soluble solids and total acids (21.73; 30.14). The smallest content of soluble solids (14.25%) was found in ‘G-9’, while ‘G-3’ and ‘G-4’ had the smallest ratio between soluble solids and total acids (8.53; 9.59) due to the high value of total acids content (1.94%; 2.09%). The genotype ‘G-2’ was characterized by the highest content of total phenols (197.50 mg GAE 100 g-1 FW) and antioxidant activity (63.26%), while the value for total anthocyanins was highest in ‘G-5’ and ‘G-8’ (17.32 and 18.93 mg C3G 100 g-1 FW, respectively). The lowest level of bioactive compounds was found in ‘G-3’. Regarding the field resistance to ‘Sharka’ disease, the assessed genotypes can be divided into three groups, without symptoms (‘G-2’ to ‘G-4’, ‘G-6’ and ‘G-7’), with minor symptoms (‘G-1’, ‘G-8’ and ‘G-9’) and with moderate symptoms (‘G-5’, ‘G-10’ and ‘G-11’).

AB - This research evaluated the effect of climatic factors (air temperature and precipitation) on the polyphenol profile and potential antioxidant and antimicrobial properties in the berries of three black currant cultivars over 8 years. During berry formation and ripening, low air temperatures and high precipitation amounts had a stimulating effect on the biosynthesis of phenolics, anthocyanins, flavonols, phenolic acids and total antioxidant capacity. Conversely, moderate temperatures and low precipitation amounts promoted the accumulation of flavonoids, gallotannins, condensed tannins and antioxidative activity. Antimicrobial activity varied from 21.70 to 203.99 mu g mL(-1), depending on the year. Principal component analysis (PCA) suggested that the biochemical profile of the berry was determined not only by the genetic predisposition of the cultivar but also by climatic factors. A significant correlation was observed among polyphenolic compounds in the berries. This study demonstrates that climate factors have an important effect on the nutrient content in berries, which should be considered when choosing the location for black currant planting.

AB - An experiment was conducted during eight years (2012–2019) to examine the effect of climatic variations (air temperature and precipitation) on the nutritional quality of berries of three black currant cultivars (‘Ben Lomond’, ‘Titania’ and ‘Čačanska Crna’). HPLC was used for the determination of sugars and organic acids extracted from berries, while ascorbic acid and minerals were evaluated by spectrophotometry. Results indicated that the chemical profile of black currants varied among cultivars. ‘Ben Lomond’ and ‘Čačanska Crna’ exhibited excellent chemical characteristics of the berries, primarily in terms of their high sugars and organic acids content, but ‘Čačanska Crna’ stood out for its highest values of ascorbic acid. Also, seasonal variations caused by temperatures and precipitation affected the biosynthesis of primary metabolites in berries. The heavier precipitation and lower temperatures during berry formation and ripening promoted the accumulation of organic acids and ascorbic acid, as well as minerals P and Fe. Conversely, moderate temperatures and rainfall amounts promoted the synthesis of soluble solids, sugars and proteins, whereas higher temperatures and lower precipitation amount enhanced accumulation of the other tested minerals. PCA analysis showed the correlations among the cultivar/year interactions and identified group patterns. The results showed that the chemical properties of black currant not only depend on the genetic predisposition of the cultivar but also on climatic conditions like air temperature and precipitation, which have an important effect on nutrient metabolism in plants and promote biosynthesis and accumulation of primary metabolites in berries.

AB - Mulching is an important agricultural technique that is not widely used in perennial fruit orchards, especially not in black currant plantings. Therefore, the aim of this study was to compare two mulched (sawdust and black foil) and un-mulched soils (bare fallow) in black currant orchard. The research determined soil physical and chemical characteristics and some properties of black currant (bush volume, yield per unit area, berry weight, soluble solids content). During five-year research, it was found that in all cultivation systems, there were changes in soil characteristics, as well as in the tested properties of black currant. Mulching with sawdust had a stimulating effect on nutrient content (humus, N, P2O5 and K2O) in soil and resulted in a stable soil water regime and steadily low soil temperatures throughout the growing season compared to the other two cultivation systems, which directly led to an increase in the bush volume and yield per unit area. On the other hand, moderate soil temperature and low soil moisture during the growing season, as recorded on bare fallow, promoted the increase in berry weight. In contrast, the soil covered with foil had a positive effect on improved soil mechanical properties, especially an increase in silt fractions and contributed to higher soil temperature and moisture, which caused higher accumulation and synthesis of soluble solids in berries. Generally, the present results suggested that cultivation systems significantly influenced soil characteristics and certain properties of black currant, which should be considered when choosing an appropriate location for establishing black currant orchards.

AB - The paper presents the main biological properties of 17 in situ old local apple cultivars and landraces grown in the regions of central and southwestern Serbia: ‘Ilinjača’ (Jezdina), ‘Kraljica’, ‘Vidovača’, ‘Ilinjača’ (Trnava), ‘J-GM/1’, ‘Prancija’, ‘Strekinja’, ‘Lepocvetka’, ‘J-LuN/1’, ‘Prancija Slatka’, ‘Džumurka’, ‘Slatka Kadumana’, ‘Lubenjaja’, ‘J-ČaO/1’, ‘Senabija’, ‘Budimka’ and ‘Kolačara’. The following characteristics of these genotypes were assessed: flowering phenophase, harvest date, pomological properties (physical and chemical, including bioactive compounds) and disease susceptibility to scab [Venturia inaequalis (Cooke) Wint.] and fireblight [Erwinia amylovora (Burnill)]. The average flowering time was during the third decade of April, whilst the predominant harvest date was from mid-September to mid-October. The highest fruit weight was determined in ‘Ilinjača’ (Trnava), while the lowest was in ‘Vidovača’ (262.99 g and 29.23 g, resp.). The best fruit quality among the assessed genotypes, measured by the fruit chemical composition, was found in ‘Senabija’ (soluble solids content ‒ 17.05%; total and invert sugars content ‒ 12.70% and 9.66%, resp.). The cultivar ‘Strekinja’ and landrace ‘J-ČaO/1’ were characterised by the highest content of total phenols and anthocyanins, respectively. In terms of fruit attractiveness, ‘Lepocvetka’, ‘J-ČaO/1’, ‘Senabija’ and ‘Budimka’ could be singled out. All of the studied genotypes showed resistance to fireblight and a relatively narrow range of susceptibility to scab under field conditions. Overall, Serbian autochthonous apple genotypes appear to carry useful characteristics that could be important for current/future breeding work and commercial growing suitable for fresh consumption, industrial and domestic processing.
U cilju održavanja kontinuiteta proučavanja autohtonog materijala, u radu su prikazani rezultati ispitivanja najznačajnijih bioloških osobina 17 in situ genotipova jabuke gajenih na različitim lokalitetima teritorijalnih jedinica centralne i jugozapadne Srbije: Ilinjača (Jezdina), Kraljica, Vidovača, Ilinjača (Trnava), J-GM/1, Prancija, Strekinja, Lepocvetka, J-LuN/1, Prancija slatka, Džumurka, Slatka kadumana, Lubenjaja, J-ČaO/1, Senabija, Budimka i Kolačara.

Rubus Watson) cultivar 'Čačanska Bestrna' has long been the most commonly grown blackberry cultivar in the Republic of Serbia, owing to its high adaptability to respective agro-environmental conditions. In recent years, in order to increase the production of biologically valuable food, the fruit growing technology has been directed towards the concepts of integral and organic production. Blackberry grey mould (Botrytis cinerea Pers.) is an economically significant agent of the disease, which during the ripening phase reduces fruit yield by about 30% each year. In this regard, the efficacy of the preventive and curative influence of foliar applied FitoBotryfun was examined for two consecutive years. Incidence of grey mould (degree of infection), morphometric traits (fruit weight and dimensions), chemical traits (soluble solids content, total and inverted sugars, and sucrose content) and fruit mineral nutrient content [macro-(Ca, Mg) and microelements (Fe, Mn, Cu, Zn)] were recorded. A high variability was found in the degree of infection between the different disease management practices (organic and conventional) and significant differences were found in the contents of sugars, Ca, Mg and Fe in the fruit. The variations over the years were observed for the same quality traits, except for fruit height. The results obtained suggest that the foliar application of FitoBotryfun during the growing season can be effective in reducing losses in the quality of blackberry fruit during ripening as well as negative effects of conventional control methods on human health and the environment.

AB - Raspberry leaf blotch emaravirus (RLBV) has become established in many Serbian raspberry orchards as the most prevalent virus of raspberries in the country. The aim of this study was to evaluate the impact of RLBV on the red raspberry 'Willamette' variety. A trial was conducted in four raspberry orchards located in Western Serbia. Fruits from RLBV-infected and uninfected canes were analyzed for fruit size (fruit length, width, height, shape, and weight), soluble solids content, pH, titratable acidity, total sugars, and total phenolic and anthocyanin contents. The results of the study confirmed that RLBV significantly decreases fruit size and weight (9.15-27.49%) of 'Willamette' fruits. Soluble solids content was higher in infected fruits (1.55-7.39%), but the increase was not significant. RLBV did not cause significant changes in titratable acidity of raspberry juice, pH or total sugars content. Total phenolic and anthocyanin contents were higher in fruits of RLBV-infected plants in two out of four locations.

Analizirani su vegetativni, generativni potencijal, masa i dimenzije ploda, indeks oblika ploda i sadržaj rastvorljive suve materije tokom osam termina berbe.
AB - The most common growing system of strawberries in Serbia is open field cultivation on beds covered with foils and a drip irrigation system. Average yields per area are low compared to countries with developed strawberry production. Low yields are a consequence of the frequent occurrence of late spring frosts during flowering and rainy periods during fruit ripening, as well as the establishment of plantations with runners originating from native orchards. In order to investigate and compare the productivity and fruit quality of strawberry cultivar ‘Alba’ depending on plant types, a field trial was carried out during 2020 with two types of planting material: ‘frigo’ plants - B category (FP) and fresh runners (FR) rooted in pots originating from native plantations. The vegetative, generative potential, fruit weight, dimensions, shape index and content of soluble solids during eight harvests were analyzed. Significantly higher values of vegetative potential (the number of crowns and leaves per rosette) were determined in FR (4.2 and 23.8, respectively) compare to FP (1.6 and 9.8, respectively). Despite significantly higher values parameters of generative potential (number of fruiting stalks and flowers per plant) in FR, FP showed 50% higher yield per plant (427.3 g) related to FR (283.8 g). FP had a constantly high fruit weight and dimensions during all harvests, while in FR there was a trend of decreasing fruit weight in the second half of the harvest period. The high soluble solids content was recorded during harvest time in FP. Bearing in mind the obtained results, ‘frigo’ plants should be used to establish an intensive strawberry plantation in order to achieve and maintain an optimal balance between growth and yield and prevent the reduction of commercial yields and fruit quality.

AB - A large number of wild relatives of cultivated fruits in Serbia indicates a significant biological and primarily genetic diversity of wild berry species. Wild berry species are rich in phenols that are usually associated with health benefits due to their antioxidant capacity. The purpose of this work was to investigate the content of total anthocyanins and total phenols of wild berry species fruit extracts originating from an area of mountain Kopaonik (south Serbia): strawberry (Fragaria vesca L. and Fragaria viridis L.), raspberry (Rubus ideaeus L. and Rubus sahatilis L.), blackberry (Rubus fructicosus L.), red currant (Ribes petraeum L.) and blueberry (Vaccinium myrtillus L.) as well as their antioxidant capacity. Blueberry and blackberry were characterized by the highest presence of anthocyanins (3.71 and 1.33 g C3G kg-1 FW). The blueberry extract (Vaccinium myrtillus L.) was also the richest in the content of total phenols (4.94 g GAE kg-1 FW) followed by an extract of strawberry (Fragaria viridis L.) and blackberry (Rubus fructicosus L.). The antioxidant effects of the sample extracts were evaluated through DPPH (2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl) antiradical assay which is shown that raspberry species Rubus sahatilis L. had significantly higher antioxidative activity (244.87 mM TE mL-1) compared to other examined wild berry species. However, despite the very high content of anthocyanins and phenols, the antioxidant capacity of blueberry extract was the lowest (211.78 mM TE mL-1 ). Inconclusion, the present research increased the knowledge about the nutritive properties of Serbian wild berry species in order to support their conservation and use in the breeding programs of small fruits for choosing berry fruits with a high content of health-promoting properties.

Ispitivanje kvaliteta ploda maline izvršeno je utvrđivanjem fizičkih (težina ploda, dimenzije, broj koštunica u plodu) i hemijskih osobina ploda [sadržaj rastvorljivih suvih materija (RSM), ukupnih (UŠ) i invertnih šećera (IŠ), saharoze (S), ukupnih kiselina (UK), ukupnih fenola (UF), ukupnih antocijana (UA) i ukupnog antioksidativnog kapaciteta ploda (UAK)] ispitivanih sorti. Najveću masu ploda, visinu i sadržaj RSM, UŠ, IŠ i S imala je sorta ‘Tulameen’, dok je sorte ‘Willamette’ pokazala lošije rezultate u pogledu mase ploda, širine, RSM, UŠ i IŠ. Sa druge strane, pomenuta sortase odlikovala značajno većim vrednostima UK (1,97%), S (0,97%) i UА (43,53 mg 100g-1 sv.m.) u poređenju sa ostalim ispitivanim sortama maline. U plodovima sorte ‘Fertodi Zamatos’ utvrđene su više vrednosti mase ploda, dimenzija i sadržaja RSM (10,3%), UK (1,63%), UŠ (5,88%), IŠ (5,22%) i UF (0,165 mg 100g-1 sv.m. ).
AB - The raspberry (Rubus idaeus L.) production in the Republic of Serbia is characterized by decades of absolute dominance of the cultivar ‘Willamette’, which is owing to high adaptability of the cultivar to respective agro-environmental conditions. Bearing in mind the fact that the demands of the world market are changing and that they are aimed at increasing fresh consumption and the range of raspberry products, it is necessary to innovate the assortment, i.e. introduce cultivars that, in addition to high yields, are characterized by fruits of a wide range of sensory and nutritive properties. To identify and compare the differences in fruit quality, five raspberry cultivars (‘TulaMagic’, ‘Tulameen’, ‘Amira’, ‘Fertodi Zamatos’, and ‘Willamette’) were harvested during three harvests in 2020 at Arilje region(Milićevo Selo). For evaluation of raspberry fruit quality, the physical (fruit weight, dimensions, number of drupelets within a fruit) and chemical properties [soluble solids content (SSC), total (TS) and invert sugars (IS), sucrose (SC), titrable acids (TA)] as well as nutritive values [total phenols content (TPC)], total anthocyanins (TAN) and antioxidative capacity (TAC) of the fruits were analyzed. The highest fruit weight, height, and the highest content of SSC, TS, IS, SC were recorded in the cultivar ‘Tulameen’, while the cultivar ‘Willamette’ showed worse results in terms of fruit weight, width, SSC, TS, IS. On the other hand abovementioned cultivar had significantly higher TA (1.97%), SC (0.97%), and TAN (43.53 mg 100g-1 FW) compared to the other cultivars. The higher values of fruit weight, dimensions, and content of SSC (10.3%), TA (1.63%), TS (5.88%), IS (5.22%), and TPC (0.165 mg 100g-1 FW) were registered in the samples of ‘Fertodi Zamatos’. ‘Amira’ and ‘Fertodi Zamatos’ had a significantly higher content of TAN and TPC, which resulted in the highest TAC (0.183 mmol TE 100g-1 FW) of these cultivars compared to the other tested cultivars.

abstract = "Proizvodnju maline (Rubus idaeus L.) u Republici Srbiji odlikuje višedecenijska apsolutna dominacija sorte ‘Willamette’, što je posledica njene visoke prilagođenosti odgovarajućim agroekološkim uslovima. Ispitivanje kvaliteta ploda maline izvršeno je utvrđivanjem fizičkih (težina ploda, dimenzije, broj koštunica u plodu) i hemijskih osobina ploda [sadržaj rastvorljivih suvih materija (RSM), ukupnih (UŠ) i invertnih šećera (IŠ), saharoze (S), ukupnih kiselina (UK), ukupnih fenola (UF), ukupnih antocijana (UA) i ukupnog antioksidativnog kapaciteta ploda (UAK)] ispitivanih sorti. Najveću masu ploda, visinu i sadržaj RSM, UŠ, IŠ i S imala je sorta ‘Tulameen’, dok je sorte ‘Willamette’ pokazala lošije rezultate u pogledu mase ploda, širine, RSM, UŠ i IŠ. AB - A large number of wild relatives of cultivated fruits in Serbia indicates a significant biological
and primarily genetic diversity of wild berry species. Wild berry species are rich in phenols that
are usually associated with health benefits due to their antioxidant capacity. The purpose of this
work was to investigate the content of total anthocyanins and total phenols of wild berry species
fruit extracts originating from an area of mountain Kopaonik (South Serbia): strawberry
(Fragaria vesca L. and Fragaria viridis L.), raspberry (Rubus ideaeus L. and Rubus sahatilis L.),
blackberry (Rubus fructicosus L.), red currant (Ribes petraeum L.) and blueberry (Vaccinium
myrtillus L.) as well as their antioxidant capacity. Blueberry and blackberry were characterized
by the highest presence of anthocyanins (3.71 and 1.33 g C3G/kg FW). The blueberry extract
(Vaccinium myrtillus L.) was also the richest in the content of total phenols (4.94 g GAE/kg FW)
followed by an extract of strawberry (Fragaria viridis L.) and blackberry (Rubus fructicosus L.).
The antioxidant effects of the sample extracts were evaluated through DPPH (2,2-diphenyl-1-
picrylhydrazyl) antiradical assay which is shown that raspberry species Rubus sahatilis L. had
significantly higher antioxidative activity (244.87 mM TE/mL) compared to other examined wild
berry species. However, despite the very high content of anthocyanins and phenols, the
antioxidant capacity of blueberry extract was the lowest (211.78 mM TE/mL). In conclusion, the
present research increased the knowledge about the nutritive properties of Serbian wild berry
species in order to support their conservation and use in the breeding programs of small fruits for
choosing berry fruits with a high content of health-promoting properties.

AB - Pear is an important pome fruit species in the Republic of Serbia, with average production of 57,793 tonnes (2016‒2020). Regardless of a wide range of new cultivars, world pear production relies on a small number of mostly old released cultivars. So far, the work at the Fruit Research Institute, Čačak (FRI) has been mainly focused on developing new pear cultivars and evaluation of ex situ genotypes. In recent years, the FRI work on assessing genetic variability in autochthonous pear material has been intensified. To avoid the loss and aiming to document, preserve and encourage the use of autochthonous material, seventeen genotypes corresponding to old cultivars or landraces were sampled in individual growers' orchards in central/southwestern Serbia. This study presents the results of in situ characterisation of main biological properties ‒ flowering phenophase, harvest maturity, pomological properties (morphometric, chemical, organoleptic) and field resistance to causal agents of diseases (pear scab and fire blight) in the assessed genotypes. The earliest onset of flowering was recorded in ‘Vodenjaja’ (April 02nd) and the latest in ‘Kantaruša’ (April 21st). Regarding harvest maturity, the genotypes were divided into the groups from early [‘Beli Mednjak’ (July 23rd)] to very late [‘Kantaruša’ and ‘Takiša’ (October 05th)]. The highest fruit weight was determined in ‘Kantaruša’ (364.86 g), while the lowest was in ‘Takiša’ (20.49 g). The best fruit quality was found in ‘Takiša’ [soluble solids (14.85%); total sugar (10.33%)], whilst ‘Kantaruša’ was characterised by the highest total phenols (174.50 mg GAE/100  g FW) and free radical scavenging activity (70.97%). The highest total anthocyanins were found in ‘Lubeničarka’ (2.71 mg/100 g FW). All of the studied genotypes showed field resistance to fire blight and most of them to pear scab. Therefore, Serbian pear genotypes appear to carry useful traits that provide substantial potential for their use in future breeding programmes and production with reduced chemical inputs.

AB - In recent years, there has been an increasing interest of Serbian berry fruit growers in establishing high-bush blueberry plantation. The first successful steps to that aim have been made in the Municipality Arilje when 10 hectares of this fruit species were planted. The most common production method of blueberry production in previous years in Serbia was growing blueberry in soils or formerly prepared substrate, in raised beds with or without foil or agrotextile covering. In past years, growing of this fruit species in containers has ever been present. Container growing method is most common in cases where owner or investor owns insufficient land or it is of too unfavourable mechanical composition.
The paper present the two-year results (2020-2021) of examining yields and more significant quality indicators of the fruit of cv Duke of the same age, grown in raised beds or containers in the villages of Ljutovnica near Gornji Milanovac, Nikšić near Kragujevac and Slatina in the vicinity of Belanovica.
The research results show that blueberry grown in containers had higher initial yield compared to those grown in raised beds. From the third year, in blueberries grown in raised beds, a higher yield per bush (2626,53 g compared to 2029,62 g) and larger fruits (1,81 g compared to 1,69 g) were noted as well as higher content of the basic indicators of chemical composition and better organoleptic fruit characteristics. Differences in yield and quality of fruits in favour of the blueberry grown in raised beds were especially pronounced in the year of high temperatures during the harvest period.

Razlike u prinosu i kvalitetu plodova u korist borovnice gajene na bankovima bile su posebno izražene u godini sa visokim temperaturama tokom perioda berbe., In recent years, there has been an increasing interest of Serbian berry fruit growers in establishing high-bush blueberry plantation. Differences in yield and quality of fruits in favour of the blueberry grown in raised beds were especially pronounced in the year of high temperatures during the harvest period.",

AB - The aim of the present research was to evaluate the effects of foliar calcium chloride spraying on postharvest quality of fruits of five apple cultivars (‘Gloster’, ‘Golden Delicious Reinders®’, ‘Granny Smith’, ‘Morren’sJonagored®’ and ‘Red Chief’) at harvest and during storage (2, 4, 6 and 8 months) in cold storage with normal atmosphere. Measurements of fruit weight, firmness, total soluble solids (TSS), titrable acidity (TA), total sugars (TS) and TS/TA ratio were performed. Significantly higher fruit weight was found in cultivar ‘Morren’sJonagored®’ (209.16 g) at harvest time, while this cultivar had low TSS (10.63%) and the lowest firmness (8.56 kg/cm2 ) compared to the other tested cultivars. Among tested cultivars TSS was the highest in ‘Golden Delicious Reinders®’ (12.01%) and ‘Granny Smith’ (12.38%) which beside cultivar ‘Red Chief’ (11.53 kg/cm2 ), had the most firm fruit (10.94 kg/cm2 ). In addition to the high content of TSS, the cultivar ‘Golden Delicious Reinders®’ had a significantly higher content of TS and TS/TA ratio related to other examined cultivars. Results showed that fruit weight, firmness, and TSS content increased in fruit treated with calcium chloride as compared to control fruit. However, these parameters decreased by prolonging the storage time, except TSS content which was similar in all storage times. Moreover, during storage, the higher level of TA (0.34%) and TS (10.23%) was observed in fruit sprayed with calcium fertilizer. However, the content of TA and TS was decreasing during storage, and the highest TS/TA ratio was recorded in the last storage time (after 6 and 8 months of storage). Generally, the quality of apple fruit treated with calcium-chloride was better than those untreated in almost all parameters. In order to improve the quality of apple fruit during storage, the use of calcium chloride-based fertilizers may be recommended.

AB - The influence of the application of soil biofertilizers on the content of sugar, macro, microelements and heavy metals in the fruits of the apple cv. Idared and Red Chief was analysed. In both cultivars, lower values of soluble solids content (SSC), total sugars (TS), inverted sugars (IS), sucrose and higher titratable acidity (TA) were measured, as well as increased absorption of Ca, Mg, Na, P, Cu, Mn. In cv. Idared, in addition to the mentioned elements, the absorption of K and Fe was increased, and the influence of biofertilizers contributed to the reduction of the absorption of Pb, Ni, Cr. The higher Ca content in the treatments enabled a more favorable K/Ca ratio, which contributes to a longer storage of fruits. Biofertilizers with specific consortia of bacteria influenced the utilization of high microbial biodiversity and had a stimulating effect on the uptake of nutrients from the soil and the optimization of their content in apple fruits.

Eksperimentom je obuhvaćeno devet sorti crne ribizle (‘Ben Lomond’, ‘Ben Sarek’, ‘Tsema’, ‘Titania’, ‘Čačanska Crna’, ‘Tisel’, ‘Tiben’, ‘Tenah’, ‘Black Reward’), deset sorti crvene ribizle (‘Losan’, ‘Redpoll’, ‘Rovada’, ‘Detvan’, ‘Junifer’, ‘Jonkherr van Tets’, ‘Industria’, ‘Red Lake’, ‘Rondom’, ‘Rolan’) i tri sorte bele ribizle (‘Weisse аus Juteborg’, ‘Primus’, ‘Blanka’). Sa druge strane, najkasnija fenološka svojstva zabeležena su kod crne ribizle ‘Ben Lomond’, crvene ‘Industria’ i bele ribizle ‘Weisse аus Juteborg’.
AB - An experiment was conducted over a period of three years to systematically examine patterns of occurrence of periodic life-cycle events or phenological stages (beginning of leaf unfolding, full leaf unfolding, inflorescence emergence, beginning of flowering, full flowering, beginning of berry set and berry ripening) in currant cultivars (Ribes sp.). The experiment included nine black currant cultivars (‘Ben Lomond’, ‘Ben Sarek’, ‘Tsema’, ‘Titania’, ‘Čačanska Crna’, ‘Tisel’, ‘Tiben’, ‘Tenah’, ‘Black Reward’), ten red currant cultivars (‘Losan’, ‘Redpoll’, ‘Rovada’, ‘Detvan’, ‘Junifer’, ‘Jonkherr van Tets’, ‘Industria’, ‘Red Lake’, ‘Rondom’, ‘Rolan’) and three white currant cultivars (‘Weisse аus Juteborg’, ‘Primus’, ‘Blanka’). Investigations were carried out at the Fruit Research Institute, Čačak, Western Serbia, during 2017-2019. Phenological properties of tested currant cultivars were determined using international descriptors for black currants (CPVO-TP/040/2 – UPOV, 2009), and red and white currant (CPVO-TP/52/1 – UPOV, 2004). The tested cultivars showed differences in the phenological traits. Under the agroenvironmental conditions of Čačak, black currant cultivars entered earlier into phenological stages compared to red currant and white currant cultivars. The earliest occurrence of phenological events was observed in black currant cvs. ‘Čačanska Crna’ and ‘Tisel’, red currant cv. ‘Junifer’ and white currant cv. ‘Primus’. On the other hand, the latest phenological properties were recorded in black currant ‘Ben Lomond’, red currant ‘Industria’ and white currant ‘Weisse аus Juteborg’. Knowledge of the phenology of currant as a fruit species that demonstrates an early entry into the growing season and flowering stage is of particular importance when choosing an appropriate location for establishing commercial currant orchards. The tested cultivars are suitable for growing under the agroclimatic conditions of Čačak, Western Serbia, given their late entry into the flowering stage as their important characteristic in terms of preventing damage due to late spring frosts.

Eksperimentom je obuhvaćeno devet sorti crne ribizle (‘Ben Lomond’, ‘Ben Sarek’, ‘Tsema’, ‘Titania’, ‘Čačanska Crna’, ‘Tisel’, ‘Tiben’, ‘Tenah’, ‘Black Reward’), deset sorti crvene ribizle (‘Losan’, ‘Redpoll’, ‘Rovada’, ‘Detvan’, ‘Junifer’, ‘Jonkherr van Tets’, ‘Industria’, ‘Red Lake’, ‘Rondom’, ‘Rolan’) i tri sorte bele ribizle (‘Weisse аus Juteborg’, ‘Primus’, ‘Blanka’). Sa druge strane, najkasnija fenološka svojstva zabeležena su kod crne ribizle ‘Ben Lomond’, crvene ‘Industria’ i bele ribizle ‘Weisse аus Juteborg’. Ispitivane sorte su pogodne za gajenje u agroklimatskim uslovima Čačka, Zapadna Srbija, s obzirom na njihov kasniji početak fenofaze cvetanja, kao važne karakteristike kojom se izbegavaju oštećenja od kasnih prolećnih mrazeva., An experiment was conducted over a period of three years to systematically examine patterns of occurrence of periodic life-cycle events or phenological stages (beginning of leaf unfolding, full leaf unfolding, inflorescence emergence, beginning of flowering, full flowering, beginning of berry set and berry ripening) in currant cultivars (Ribes sp.). The tested cultivars are suitable for growing under the agroclimatic conditions of Čačak, Western Serbia, given their late entry into the flowering stage as their important characteristic in terms of preventing damage due to late spring frosts.",

AB - This research was conducted toexamine the effect of altitude on fruit and stone characteristics (weight, length, width and thickness) in fruits of nine plum cultivars (Boranka, Čačanska Rana, Čačanska Lepotica, Timočanka, Krina, Mildora, Stanley, Čačanska Najbolja and Čačanska Rodna). The experiment was performed at two locations: Location 1 – (300 m altitude) and Location 2 – (550 m altitude). During the three-year research, at both altitudes, there were changes in physical attributes of fruits. Results showed that fruit weight, as well as other tested fruit dimensions increased with an increase in altitude. The average fruit weight was higher by 9.57% at the higher altitude location, whereas fruit length, width, and height were higher by 5.97%, 6.37% and 5.78%, respectively. Values for stone characteristics were reversed from values for fruit characteristics. Namely, stone weight and dimensions, had lower values in plum fruits grown at higher altitude. Stalk length was shorter at the lowest altitude location. Cultivars also showed highly significant differences in the tested parameters. In both altitudes, the highest fruit characteristics were determined in cultivar Timočanka, and the lowest in cultivar Mildora. The present results indicated that altitude had a significant effect on the physical attributes of plum fruits, which should be considered when establishing commercial plum orchards.

AB - This study examined the effect of soil temperature and moisture of different soil cultivation systems-unmulched soil, sawdust mulch, and black foil mulch-on the sugar and acid profiles, levels of bioactive phenolic compounds, and antioxidant and cytotoxic activity in black currant (cv. 'Titania') berries. The higher soil temperature under black foil mulch at 0-30 cm depth and on the foil surface during fruit set and fruit maturation, as well as the higher soil moisture content, directly led to an increase in the accumulation of total sugars, invert sugars, and sucrose compared with the other two cultivation systems. On the other hand, moderate soil temperature and low soil moisture, as recorded on unmulched soil, favoured the accumulation of total phenolics and flavonoids in berries, whereas no difference was observed in the levels of condensed tannins or gallotannins between unmulched soil and sawdust mulch treatment. Mulching with sawdust, which resulted in a stable soil water regime and steadily low soil temperatures, promoted the synthesis of all other chemical parameters tested (fructose, glucose, total acids, pH, organic acids, ascorbic acid, antioxidant activity, and cytotoxic activity). There was no difference in total anthocyanin content among soil cultivation systems. The present results suggest that soil temperature and moisture have an important effect on plant metabolism and promote the synthesis and accumulation of chemical compounds and biological activity in the fruit, thus positively affecting the quality and commercial value of the fruit.

AB - This study was aimed at optimizing primary metabolites (sugars, acids, vitamins, and minerals) and testing antimicrobial activity in the berries of aronia (Aronia melanocarpa [Michx.] Elliott) cv. 'Nero' grown using black foil mulch and without mulch (bare soil). Soil cultivation systems showed significant effect on the tested parameters. Black foil mulch allowed early soil warming and caused an increase in soil temperature and moisture during the growing season, thus promoting the synthesis of soluble solids, sugars (total sugars and individual invert sugars), protein, microelement iron and vitamin A. In contrast, bare soil, with lower soil water regimen and temperature, directly led to an increase in acids (total acids, pH, organic acids), macroelements (potassium, calcium, phosphorus, magnesium, and sodium) and vitamins C and B3 in aronia berries. Soil cultivation systems did not have a significant effect on the synthesis of vitamins B1 or B2 or of microelements copper, zinc, or molybdenum. Glucose was the dominant individual invert sugar in all berry extracts, followed by fructose, while the amount of sucrose was very low. In terms of organic acids, the main organic acid was malic acid, whereas lower quantities of citric acid were found. Antimicrobial activity varied from 19.31 to 143.23 mu g/ml depending on the soil cultivation system. The results indicate that aronia can be grown on foil-mulched soils and that foil mulch had a significant effect on the synthesis and accumulation of certain primary metabolites and antimicrobial activity in aronia berries.
